Editorial Reviews

It's safe to assume that fans of My Morning Jacket will take an immediate liking to the first song on Lord Huron's 2012 debut album, Lonesome Dreams. Ends of the Earth finds frontman Ben Schneider singing in a high, throaty croon similar to that of MMJ frontman Jim James (right down to the gratuitous amounts of reverb). But there are sublime spaghetti western undertones resonating here; they have more in common with Bob Dylan's 1973 score for Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid than anything related to Ennio Morricone.

This is great, intoxicating music, plain and simple. It took one song, and I was sold. LH hits a sweet spot that so many bands seem to miss.. absolutely perfecting the sound that Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear and Band of Horses keep trying to make.

Well, I appreciate the other reviewers enthusiasm for this album, which is partly why I decided to give it a try. This is a very pleasant album to listen to and it is true that there are really no weak songs on it (here's the but...)However, there are also no real standout songs. Most of the tracks share a very similar tempo and are a mix of the same various stringed instruments. The vocals are presented slightly behind the instrumentals on all tracks. All in all this is a nice album for listening to while you are working around the house, or doing some arts and crafts, but I find myself getting ansy for something different by track 5 or 6 if I'm listening to the whole album straight through in my car or while enjoying a beverage on my couch.

Brilliant song writing. The wilderness feel to the album and the overwhelming presence of a Michigan spirit. Would highly recommend.

First song: excellent. Second song: catchy. Third song: weirdly top 50. Fourth song: "Oh, so this is a little different. I'll have to think about this for awhile." Fifth song: nice; I like. Sixth song: yeah, kind of like the Boss, but gamelan-- WHAT! Seventh song: highly listenable. Eighth song: prairie sadness. Ninth song: resurgent command. Tenth song: lilting loss and lamentable leave-taking. All in all, this album gets better with every listen. You'll find yourself playing these in your head when you don't have access. Really, there are few albums over the course of time wherein every track is worthy. Give it a listen, give it time. You won't be sorry.

Great album. A little Bon Iver-ish, a little Paul Simon 'Graceland'-ish, a little like a lot of different musicians but not strikingly similar to anything I've ever seriously listened to. Highly recommended for road trips. And yes, the vinyl does come with a digital download. Good band - my girlfriend even likes it so that says something - buy their album and go to their shows.

I bought this album about a week ago and can't stop listening to it. This album has everything I want to hear. Excellent vocal harmonies, beautifully layered sounds, dramatic rhythms with interesting and dynamic percussion, lyrics with feeling. Overall, just impressive musicianship. Highly recommended.

I was trying to find a song in the iTunes store that it turned out isn't available in it, but I figured I'd preview "Time to Run," since it was at the top of the results for my search. Then, I decided to preview all the songs. I enjoyed every single preview, so I went ahead and hopped on over here to Amazon to buy the album.

I'm writing this as I listen to it for the second time, and here're my thoughts about it overall.

Mellow yet uplifting. Not too fast, not too slow, neither too hard nor too soft. Though, there's also an undertone of melancholy to all the songs. I'm not quite sure how to describe the feeling, but if I had to try, I'd say it's a sense of hopefulness with a hint of loss. Like looking forward to what's new while having to let go of the old. Wonder at the unknown, but also the sadness of giving up the familiar. It's like moving out on your own as you begin adulthood.

Bittersweet comes to mind.

I like every single single on the album--an extremely rare occurrence. This is the kind of music I like to drive, cycle or even just sit around and relax to. Excellent work. I definitely look forward to more from them.

Note: There's a bonus track on the iTunes version of this album called "The Stranger." I bought it separately, because I like getting as many songs in MP3 format from the get-go as possible, so there'll be less loss of quality, since there's no need to convert the already-compressed AAC iTunes file to MP3 for use in other ecosystems besides iTunes/iPod/iPhone/i...you get the idea.

Update: Okay. So, I'm more of a visual person sometimes, just depending on the circumstances, and, as it turns out, reading the lyrics to the songs on this album as I listen to them gives the words much more impact.

This is a brilliant album and deserves to be a huge hit. It is one of those rare albums with no dud songs or filler. The harmonies are amazing , and blend perfectly with some great guitar playing. My favourite tracks were ghosts on the shore and lullaby. Buy this album and bore your friends by keep talking about it! He also has two great ep's out too.
