An Honest Voice,
By Rod James (Georgetown, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lonesome Standard Time (Audio CD)
Kathy Mattea does not possess the same cover-model's looks that bless the likes of Shania Twain, but her voice and her material are more substantial than most of what one hears from the current crop of "airbrush beauties" that Nashville is dealing these days. Her interpretations on this CD are honest and mature, relating some common human experiences that are accessible to just about everyone. The wistful ballads "Seeds" and "Knee-Deep in a River" are emotionally affecting without being sappy, and the title cut and "33, 45, 78" are clever without being cutesy. No culls at all on this one. Some CDs are interesting for a while, but soon disappear. This one will stay in my "often-played" stack. I even plan to perform a couple of the cuts myself.

So Smooth and So Good!,
By Michael Butts (Berkeley Springs, WV USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)

Shania Who? Faith Who? Martina Who? Kathy Mattea makes these current country babes sound like pre-schoolers. Over the years, Kathy has churned out brilliant albums, filled with magnificent songs and the clearest, most emotional vocals of any other country singer, with the possible exception of Trisha Yearwood. At any rate, Kathy's early "Lonesome Standard Time" is a brilliant collection of heartbreaking ballads and fun up-tempo tunes. This young lady from West Virginia is a class act and deserves much more recognition than she has received. I would suggest LeAnn Rimes listen to Kathy's albums and learn why she needs to mature as a vocalist before she'll ever reach the pinnacles she obviously has set for herself. What a wonderful CD!

Listen to this CD--and fall in love with Kathy's voice,

That was the first CD from Kathy Mattea we had, and all the family, old and young, just fell in love with that voice. We still feel the need to listen to it over and over again. I wish she were better known in Europe and came here on a tour!

A forgotten gem,

Kathy's most successful years were the late eighties, but this 1992 album is every bit as good as the brilliant albums she recorded back then and the style of this album is similar. The title track has a very upbeat tune that defies the sadness of its lyrics, but it is in that sense typical of the album - the music is bright and cheery, but the lyrics are often about loneliness and yearning. The most famous cover here, Amarillo, is an amusing song about a woman who loses her man to a jukebox and a pinball machine. Amarillo was an Emmylou song that first appeared on her Elite hotel album in 1976. Kathy's music may not be as popular today as it was in the late eighties, but it still sounds as good as ever and this is a fine example of her work despite the absence of any of her really big country hits.

Lively and fun - You'll enjoy this disc,
By A Customer
This review is from: Lonesome Standard Time (Audio CD)
Kathy's 8th album, recorded in 1992, is classic Kathy, with some upbeat tunes, some quieter numbers and a toe-tapping country blues classic with great fiddle work. Kathy always selects good songs and these are no exceptions including Nanci Griffith's lively "Listen to the Radio", the fun retrospective "33,45,78 Record Time", the beautiful melody and lyrics of "Seeds" and the tongue in cheek wit of "Lonely at the Bottom." My favorite is "Forgive and Forget", a Kieran Kane song with a great fiddle accompaniment by Jonathan Yudkin. You won't regret owning this disc especially if you're a Kathy Mattea fan or if you just want to sample a gifted female vocalist in the country genre.

Kathy Mattea has a pretty voice, and this was the first album she made after recoveing from an operation on her voice. It acutally came out stronger than before. Her interpetation of Larry Cordle and Jim Rushings Lonesome Standard Time is great, as well as Knee Deep In A River. An album with good songs.
