5.0 out of 5 stars Dirt Cheap Yet Awesome Music!, September 29, 2005
This review is from: Lonesome Town (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful budget collection of vintage Ricky Nelson tracks including some of his most loved songs like "Hello Mary Lou", "Believe What You Say", and "Stood Up". A very good introduction to Ricky, if this is your first Ricky Nelson CD I'm sure it won't be your last!

3.0 out of 5 stars Still Not A Bad Buy, September 26, 2007

This review is from: Lonesome Town (Audio CD)
When this came out in 1995 as a CD version of an earlier vinyl LP it was like most other CD releases at that time in that it had just 12 selections and no liner notes whatsoever, other than the same brief paragraph on the reverse that had appeared on the LP.

But what set it apart from most at that time was the fact that all 12 tracks were hit singles for Ricky on the Imperial label, perhaps strictly speaking not exactly all being among his "All-Time Greatest" as the title suggests - but hits nevertheless. For example, I'm In Love Again, from his 1958 album Ricky Nelson, was a relatively minor # 67 Billboard Pop Hot 100 in early 1963 when re-released as the flipside to That's All (# 48 and NOT here), while If You Can't Rock Me, culled from his 1957 album Ricky, fared even worse at # 100 when released as the B-side to Old Enough To Love in mid-1963 - and also not here.

The rest, however, can safely be described as being among his all-time best as Be-Bop Baby made it to # 3 Billboard Pop Top 100/# 5 R&B in late 1957 while its B-side, Have I Told You Lately (That I Love You) hit the # 29 Top 100 slot, and Stood Up cruised to # 2 Top 100/# 4 R&B/AND # 8 Country, and its flip, Waitin' In School, reached # 12 R&B/Country and # 18 Top 100 early 1958. He also made all three charts with Believe What You Say, which got to # 4 Top 100/# 6 R&B/# 10 Country in spring 1958.

Lonesome Town scored at # 7 Billboard Pop Hot 100 and # 15 R&B in late 1958, It's Late made the Top 10 at # 9 Hot 100 abd # 30 R&B that spring as the B-side of Never Be Anyone Else But You (a better hit at # 6 but not included here), You Are The Only One, a modest # 25 Hot 100 in early 1961, Just A Little Too Much, which was a # 9 Hot 100 in summer 1959 - the same as the B-side, Sweeter Than You, which is not here, and Hello Mary Lou a solid # 9 Hot 100 in early summer 1961, although its A-side, Travelin' Man, was the greater hit, going to # 1 Hot 100, and that is excluded here.

The thing is, as welcome as this release was back in 1995, it's since been surpassed by several better Ricky (Rick) Nelson compilations, some of which have more than double the tracks, even better sound reproduction, and copious liner notes. And for not that much more money, considering what you're getting. I would recommend this only if there are one or two songs you're seeking.
