Excellent CD! (And her first release was even better!),

Mare's voice is beautiful, and her music and lyrics are at once catchy and poetic...heart-felt and giddy. I truely love this CD! However (those of you who already love this CD get your pens ready) her first release "What Might Be" which is now out of print is even better. I have an analog tape of it and I have honestly played it so much that it is near death. It is some of the best music I own. I bought it on a lark & have only regretted that I didn't buy it on CD (it was only released on tape except to radio stations--heresay here--and the used record store down the way HAD a CD of it which I took a pass on until too late!) I bought the soundtrack of Georgia for the one new song on it...the movie was written for Mare and Jennifer Jason Leigh by Leigh's mom. And that wonderful song Jennifer's character butchers is from that first Mare release! If you see it snap it up!

5 STARS IS NOT ENOUGH!,

This CD is definitely in my top ten picks in several categories - Best Album, Best Single, Best Female recording....I bought this album close to 4 years ago - without being familiar with Ms. Winningham's talent as a singer/songwriter. I was only familiar with her as an actress - primarily form "St. Elmo's Fire". I brought the album home and before I had listened to half of it, I was phoning local record shops in hopes of ordering other offerings from Mare. But alas, I was too late. Still I cherish this album "Lonesomers". Mare's vocal abilities stretch across a wide chasm of talent, from plaintiff (Silver Bullets) to playful (Wake Up). Her writing ability is simple and yet somehow complex at the same time. By far the outstanding track on this CD is "This Tower". I defy anyone not to be able to relate to this song. And once you've really listened to it, it is infectious. You'll find yourself humming or singing it for days. It is one of those songs that will be stuck in your head for days (In a delightful way)! Do not miss the chance of adding this "too well hidden gem" to your CD collection today!

One of my favorite CDs!,

I waited a long time for Mare to release a CD. Back in 1992 she released a very hard-to-find tape (yes, I've got a copy!) called "What Might Be". It's not nearly as good as "Lonesomers," but I'd still like to see it come out on CD, if only for the song "If I Wanted."In any case, Lonesomers is chock full of wonderfully clever songs! Get it! And then, see her live. It's difficult, but she lives in the SF Bay Area, and she performs sometimes at Freight & Salvage in Berkeley. I first heard her on the radio show, "West Coast Live!" and I was entranced!

Garage-studio folk rock that really caught my ear,

I bought this C.D. because I was a great fan of the TV movie "Freedom" in the 70's. The movie featured Mare Winningham singing some great tunes, and her voice really impressed me. Alas, the years have taken a toll on her vocal chords, but her melodies are infectious and the C.D, though at times sounding like it was recorded in a basement, is delightful. If you don't agree at first, give it a few listens, you'll be humming the tunes in your head.

Mare Winningham is a woman of many talents. She is an accomplished actress and a gifted musical artist. Mare wrote most of the songs on this album and also plays the guitar and dulcimer; her voice is remarkable, solid and with a full range. In many ways, Mare's voice reminds me of Sandy Denny. She sings with enthusiasm and it's clear that she's thoroughly enjoying her labor of love. Great album!

All I can say is - pay no attention to the in-house 'pan' that begins this page. LONESOMERS is somewhere on the pop end of folk, but VERY addictive - once you've had it a while you tend to play it again and again, as I found this summer, and others have told me since. Mare is the real thing, she has her own style and isn't a clone of Shawn or Dar or the other obvious comparison singers. My favorite tracks are 'This Tower,' 'Silver Bullet' and the title track 'Lonesomers'; unfortunately only 'This Tower' has a sound sample here.I do think that Mare will continue to improve with further albums, but LONESOMERS is a keeper, and it's sad to see it trashed on Amazon right below the 'Buy It!' icon...

Like all the rest, after seeing Georgia I bought this CD and it has become one of my favorites. It is defiantly a "If you were stuck on desert island and could have x amount of CDs" this would be one of them. That is only the highest compliment I can give. This album is definitely for all of us lonesomers out there........... What Might Be, is still in print.

I first heard Mare Winningham sing in the movie, Georgia, where she played the title role along with Jennifer Jason Leigh. I could not believe that she was actually singing her own songs! I have always enjoyed her in all of the films and TV roles I have seen her in for years but never knew that she was such a talented singer/songwriter/musician as she is. Her beautiful singing voice on this CD is for anyone who enjoys folksinging. She also wrote all of the songs herself. I have purchased all of her music that she has out, including the soundtrack to the movie, GEORGIA. Enjoy!

This CD was wonderful. Ray Kasten doesn't know what he's talking about. Mary Winningham is a multi talented lady and it's about time the world was treated to her beautiful voice.
