Book Description

2 and upP and up
Here are ten tales for the very young told in the exuberant spirit of Anne Rockwell's Once Upon a Time This Morning, which Booklist hailed as "joyful storytelling." This time each story begins with "Not so long ago, " and the under-five audience will be quick to recognize and embrace the boy who wants to be a honey bear, the girl who longs to chew bubble gum, the little boy who wishes he were as big as his sister, and many more. The perfect read-aloud for toddlers who find challenge and adventure on a daily basis -- and long to hear it recounted in a picture book just for them!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-A collection of 10 two-page stories, each of which begins "Not so long ago." In "The Scared Puppy," a young boy comforts his frightened puppy during a thunderstorm. He tries to coax his pet out from under a chair and eventually cuddles him in his baby blanket. In "Lullaby and Good-Night," a child makes up his own lullaby and puts his mother to sleep. In "Aliens," a little girl blames aliens for breaking a glass. Her unfazed grandmother responds that aliens "haven't been to visit me since your father was a small boy." Each selection is accompanied by illustrations done in colored pencil and felt-tipped pen, resulting in simple, yet entertaining vignettes. These tales display Rockwell's insight into the lives of children and are coupled with a narrative flair and dashes of humor and sweetness. A companion volume to Once Upon a Time This Morning (Greenwillow, 1997), this is a solid addition to the author's long list of children's books.

Review

"Rockwell writes with ease about the trials and tribulations of toddlerhood in these simple, two-page pieces . . . Librarians looking for ways to connect with their youngest patrons will find themselves reaching for this collection again and again."-- ALA "Booklist"

4.0 out of 5 stars Hours of enjoyment for my daughter, June 26, 2011
By
This review is from: Long Ago Yesterday (Hardcover)
My daughter picked this up during a library visit, and now borrows it all the time which is why I'm finally purchasing a copy. I find the stories to be extremely mundane, but this is something that children really seem to enjoy. It's one of the few books that she's willing to "help" me read by reading any words that she knows when I pause and point to them. The print could be bigger; that would make reading together much easier. But the stories are a nice length and my little girl doesn't seem to tire of them.

2.0 out of 5 stars So so book, pictures could be better, June 23, 2003
This review is from: Long Ago Yesterday (Hardcover)
My daughter likes it, but the stories are printed with small words making it hard for her to follow along. I would not purchase it again.
