This is one of the few books I could find about Long Island and it does indeed give you a lot of information about the various sites that can be visited although you will find no information about hotels, restaurants or even travel "tips." It is solely a list of "attractions," mostly things like sea captains homes and museums, many of which I was surprised were considered interesting enough to be placed in a travel book. I suspect that this is a very complete list of the things there are to see on Long Island and for that I give the book the credit it is due. That being said however, the book is also so dry and boring that even I, who usually reads travel books from cover to cover, couldn't get through this one. If you're going to a specific town and just want to know what sites are available in the immediate area, then I guess this is an okay guide because you will only need to read those few pages. But for someone without a specific destination in mind, who is trying to find the best sites to see in order to make a decision about where to stay and how to plan their entire trip, well, you're going to have a difficult time wading through this book to find which sites will be the most interesting to you. My best bet I found, was to get a Moon (or any other) handbook of New York State and use that to find the most popular Long Island sites. Once I'd decided where I would be staying, I was then able to use this book to expand my knowledge of many additional sites that town/area has to offer.

I bought this book in anticipation of my visit to Long Island. With no photos and little information about local restaurants and hot spots, it was not particularly useful as a tourist's guide. It had lots of information about the provenance of real estate in the area and might be more aptly named, an insiders guide to the homes of... It just didn't suit my purpose on my visit to Long Island.
