3.0 out of 5 stars It was good but not near as good as the first one.
Ok. Don't get me wrong the storyline itself was good, actually pretty unique. I have never read a romantic suspense surrounding a group of swingers. That being said I think that made it difficult for Noah and Rain to actually form a bond or relationship. They just didn't seem connected as well as the characters of the previous book. The end was anti-climatic for me...

4.0 out of 5 stars Romance suspense, October 24, 2009
This review is from: Long, Lean and Lethal (Mass Market Paperback)
Long Lean and Lethal is the sequel to Lorie O'Clare's romance suspense about hot FBI agents. In this installment,FBI agent Noah Kayne is paired with the local police Rain Huxtable. Both protest that they work best alone but since the killer is targeting swing couples, they have to work together. Undercover as a married couple, the heat starts immediately. Noah's personality is very dominant and this works for Rain since she gets turned on when fighting and getting in Noah's face throughout the book. The plot for this was really good as you review the information on the previous murders and try to figure out who in the swingers group has decided to pick members off. The suspense kept me turning the pages. The only that bothered me though was the interaction between the hero and the heroine. There was great chemistry between the two and I would have enjoyed their exchanges more if there werent these arguments that turned into weird, aggressive foreplay that led to sex. I'm not sure if O'Clare was trying to play up a Dom/Sub relationship or Dom/Dom with the hero and heroine. An example would be Rain literally "needing" to fight Kane before sex almost every time. It was so out of rhythm with the rest of the story that it stood out. I guess it fit with Rain's aggressive character but romance lovers may be turned off by the almost violent like sex scenes.(nothing humiliating or demeaning.just physical fights) Other than that it was a great story. Nice plot, nice pacing as the story moves through and an excellent mix of story and romance.

3.0 out of 5 stars It was good but not near as good as the first one., March 4, 2010
This review is from: Long, Lean and Lethal (Mass Market Paperback)
The end was anti-climatic for me as well. I had a hard time connecting with Rain as a character, I just didn't get her.

Let me state again the story is good but if I have to compare it to the first one it is just not on the same level. If I had read this one first I probably would have rated it differently. Now the sex scenes were still smoking hot and right on par with what I expected from the author. With that being said I still think this will be a great series and I can't wait to read the third installment!

3.0 out of 5 stars Long, Lean and Lethal, June 8, 2011
This review is from: Long, Lean and Lethal (Mass Market Paperback)

Detective Rain Huxtable and FBI Special Agent Noah Kayne are posing as a married couple to infiltrate a swingers club. Some of the members have been mysteriously murdered. Posing as a couple is hard for both of them because of their own personal baggage. The show they put on might save their lives.

It's obvious from the beginning that Rain and Noah are very attracted to each other and that it's more than just a sexual attraction. It's also obvious that they are very uncomfortable with their assignment. Sex is not an undertone in Long, Lean and Lethal; it's a very sexual story. The swingers lifestyle is not one I am very comfortable with. Rain and Noah weren't either so the book itself feels awkward and uncomfortable most of the time. Noah's possessiveness for Rain is sexy, but he has to pretend he would share her. And Rain has to put herself in situations that she doesn't like for the sake of the case. Long, Lean and Lethal has a strong romance and a lot of suspense. It puts the "erotic" in erotic romance, but it's not how I like my romance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Filled with intrigue, romance and sizzling attraction, October 3, 2010
This review is from: Long, Lean and Lethal (Mass Market Paperback)
FBI agent Noah Kayne was called in to help local police detective Rain Huxtable solve a series of murder crimes that have the same MO as crimes in other cities, leading them to believe this could be the work of a serial killer. However, they weren't ecstatic to be paired up as partners, especially when they have to go undercover as a married couple to infiltrate the group of swingers to which the victims belong. But their sizzling attraction to each other couldn't be denied, and it wasn't long before they were starting to fall for each other.

Lorie O'Clare provides the right combination of romance and mystery, intrigue and scorching hot scenes. The mystery of who the killer was and his/her motive kept me turning the pages to satisfy my curiosity. And of course, it was also curiosity that prompted me to pick up this book to know more about that world of which I know nothing about: the swingers world and the whys and wherefores of their activities.

Noah Kayne possessed a forceful personality and this showed in the way he showed Rain who was "boss" right from the beginning. He rubs me a little wrong here, coz I feel like he was manhandling the heroine a little. But perhaps Rain needed to be shown this, else she would've walked all over Noah later on. Also, Rain seemed to need a man who can handle her, who can go toe-to-toe with her when she's in a fighting mood, especially when Noah's dominance turns her on. You know how for some couples disagreements serve as the foreplay? Well, for Noah and Rain, they needed to get physical. A little too physical for me, but hey, whatever pushes your button.

However, Noah could be tender and patient with Rain when she needed it, like the time when certain words triggered her memories of her dad and the way she still grieved for him. On the other hand, Rain also satisfied Noah's needs and expectations, as he'd been burned before by a woman who wanted a little extra on the side.

What I like about this book is that there's a real intrigue and crime that our hero and heroine has to solve, and I like how they never lose sight of their mission, despite their attraction to each other. (I've read a book where the "mission" is but an excuse for the main characters to be put into close contact with one another.) Even in their mission, Noah and Rain complemented each other, each bringing something to the table that the other lacked. Clues are peppered throughout the book to prod the reader into making an educated guess as to who the villain could be (I love this part of romantic suspense, like playing Cluedo), and the suspense and action keeps me turning the pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Plains police procedural romance, October 9, 2009
This review is from: Long, Lean and Lethal (Mass Market Paperback)
The fourth dead spouse leads the Lincoln, Nebraska police department to conclude a serial killer is one the loose although they have not ruled out a paid killer. Still either way they feel out of their league so the brass asks the FBI to help. The Feds send Agent Noah Kayne to assist in apprehending the psychopath. The plan is to use Lincoln PD homicide detective Rain Huxtable as Kayne's swinging spouse to draw out the predator.

Rain loathes the role she is expected to play as she prefers being alone. However, once in the part, she does not have to act as Noah's kisses heats her loins ands he feels the same way. Still the pair understands the mission is to infiltrate the swingers club in which four members are dead.

This Great Plains police procedural romance is an engaging tale as the lead cops fall in love while masquerading as a loving couple. The sequel to TALL, DARK, AND DEADLY (starring South Dakota) is a fun tale as the pair put on a show; however, the personal relationship never fully gels outside the mission. Still fans will enjoy the escapades of two enchanting law enforcement officials finding love while on a deadly case together.
