Editorial Reviews

Country queen Connie Smith is back after a long hiatus. Now she's showing a younger generation of country stars how it is done with this all new line up of great songs that are true to her earlier sound.

Customer Reviews

We personally think her new songs are good, she did good to come up with new.

Although her voice has aged and the tone has changed, she's still a keen stylist with an ear for great material.

Connie Smith
"Long Line Of Heartaches"
(Sugar Hill, 2011)
Produced by Marty Stuart
----------------------------------------------------
Connie Smith is one of my favorite Nashville artists from the 1960s and '70s; a joyful singer with a crystalline voice who recorded some of the brightest hits of the countrypolitan era. She's been mostly off the radar since the late '70s, and this new record is only her third studio album since 1978, and her first since 1998. Although her voice has aged and the tone has changed, she's still a keen stylist with an ear for great material. Along with her husband, producer Marty Stuart, she's crafted a strong set of traditionally-minded country tunes. Songs like "Long Line Of Heartaches," "That Makes Two Of Us" and "My Part Of Forever" hearken back to the heyday of pop-country heartsongs, with robust musical backing by Stuart and his crew. Also joining Ms. Smith are her three daughters, who sing harmony on the closing track, "Take My Hand." Known mostly as a song stylist in her youth, here Connie Smith asserts herself as a composer, co-writing nearly half the songs on this album; other songs come from the likes of Roy Drusky, Dallas Frazier and Harlan Howard. Longtime fans will welcome this new record, which shows that the old gal's still going strong. Check it out! (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To Country Music)

Singer Connie Smith has released her first album in more than a decade and it stacks up with the legendary hits that made her famous nearly 50 years ago. One of our most distinct stylists, Smith's fans includes Dolly Parton, George Jones and Martina McBride who consider her the best female vocalist in country music

On her new Sugar Hill release Long Line Of Heartaches she serves up a dozen songs that fulfill every fan's hope; a classic country album in the Connie Smith tradition.

The songs are a mix of originals, co-written with husband/producer Marty Stuart such as the title cut "Long Line Of Heartaches," "I'm Not Blue," "Pain Of A Broken Heart," "You And Me" and the swinging "Blue Heartaches." Other songs included here are from some of the same classic country songwriters that have provided material to her since the early 60's, like Dallas Frazier who's "A Heart like You," is the perfect vehicle for Smith's still powerful vocals.

At an in store appearance at Grimey's in Nashville, the day of the album release Smith said the album picks up where she left off and in 2011 she continues the classic country tradition. There's no hint at trying for anything contemporary here and her great song choices come from familiar names like Harlan Howard, Johnny Russell, Kostas, Patty Loveless and Emory Gordy Jr.

There's plenty of twang here from her road band, The Sundowners who are among the tightest outfits in country music. Band leader Rod Hamm on bass, Rick McClure on drums, steel guitarist Gary Carter and lead guitarist Rick Wright have performed together so much that their riffs are perfectly placed within her phrasing which is, as it has always been, near perfect.

It is good to see Connie Smith come back with a new CD after so many years. Let's start with the good. This album is pure country with great instrumentation and Connie's voice seems to have kept most of its power that it had in the 60's & 70's. There are some standout tracks. "Ain't You Even Gonna Cry", "That Makes Two of Us" & "Take My Hand" These are all slow songs that will make you miss real country music. While not as good as those 3 Connie does good on all of the slow songs. The uptempo songs are good but not memorable enough to write anything special about. You will enjoy hearing the pure country on the uptempo songs even if they are not classics to be. While this is a good CD I can't quite give it 4 stars because to be honest, even though it is good it is not a 5 star album. One reason is that the uptempo songs start running together and all sound just a bit too similar. Another reason is that while the slow songs are good Connie does not have the type of emotion in her voice as say Tammy, Loretta, or Dolly. While I do realize that comparison is an unfair standard, I am just being honest. You will enjoy the songs but will not be extremely emotionally connected to them. I will however admit that Connie proves me wrong on the religions "Take My Hand". Even though I am not normally a huge fan of religious/gospel tunes Connie excels on this track and you do FEEL every word. Overall this a good pure country album. It may not be a CD that you remeber to get out in 10 years but if you do I would bet you'd still enjoy

I know Connie, and have for many years, but haven't seen her in years. I love her, she is 100% country. There are a song or 2 on this product, but I think she should have selected some better songs. Don't get me wrong, the Connie Smith power was there, the quality of songs wasn't. I don't care if she sang the phone book, it would be great. There is only one connie smith, but I know one who could be #2 , and her name is Mona McCall on heart of texas records.

I was a country music DJ for over 30 years, and I know good stuff when I hear it. Don't run and hide from this CD, it is Still great Connie Smith.
