Editorial Reviews

Prominent hip-hop rising star A$AP Rocky will release his highly anticipated Polo Grounds Music/RCA Records debut album, LONG.LIVE.A$AP on January 15th, 2013. The album will feature the buzz worthy "Goldie" and the Noah "40" Shebib produced hit, "F**kin' Problems" featuring hip-hop elites Drake, 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar, which was recently most added at urban and rhythm radio and continues to dominate airwaves.

Executive produced by A$AP Rocky and A$AP Yams, the LONG.LIVE.A$AP release will also feature guest appearances by ScHoolboy Q, Santigold, Joey Bada$$, Yelawolf, Danny Brown, Action Bronson and Big K.R.I.T. A$AP Rocky takes the reins as producer and co-producer on several tracks along with Danger Mouse, Jim Jonsin, Rico Love, Clams Casino, Skrillex, Hit-Boy and more.

Anyone who considers themselves a rap enthusiast must be encouraged by the influx of new talent streaming in. Harlem rapper Rakim Mayers, better known as A$AP Rocky, is making a strong push toward the front of the line. He's establishing himself in the industry the way many of his brethren are: with mixtapes. Kendrick Lamar and Frank Ocean, most notably, have presaged highly successful albums with independently released mixtapes. Most notable is Rocky's $3 million record deal with Sony/RCA subdivision Polo Grounds Music, the fruit of which is his major label debut, LongLiveA$AP.

One thing this album does not do is try to be intellectual. In strong contrast to recent albums predicated delivering sociopolitical messages, like Killer Mike's R.A.P. Music, or albums with strong thematic elements like Kendrick Lamar's Good kid m.A.A.D. city, Rocky's record doesn't make an effort to be lyrically deep. Rocky himself puts it best on album closer "Suddenly," declaring "don't view me as no conscious cat, this ain't no conscious rap/f*** the conscious crap, my mac'll push your conscious back."

What LongLiveA$AP does do is display Rocky's boundless skill as a rapper. His delivery is loud, forceful and clear; he is able to spit rhymes with great rhythm and flow. It also serves as a great showcase piece for the youth rap movement. LongLiveA$AP rounds up most of the key names being shouted now within the indie community (with the obvious exception of the Odd Future collective).

But it doesn't take long to find Odd Future parallels. Album opener "Long Live A$AP" is an ominous and foreboding track that shows off Rocky's sense of paranoia. He asks, "who's that looking in my window with a pistol to my curtain?

I had always wondered who this "A$AP Rocky" Was for years, And who "A$AP Mob" was. I'd seen the names everywhere on the web. Finally one day i listened to "Goldie" and "Pesos" I was like wow. His sound is super unique, the production quality is dope and i'm impressed. My favorite track would have to be "Long Live A$AP" But the whole album is 100% to me. I was able to listen to it with no skips. Which is rare now a days. Of course I like some songs more than others but again, the whole album is super solid. He's unique in his image and with his choice of production. Also a talented producer as well :) 5 STARS!

Not an easy album to get hold of since its beats tend toward the atmospheric, the blunted. Well, apparently that's all a n**** need, plus p**** and some m****. I'm tempted to say that both Drake and Kendrick Lamar kill even Rocky's best verses with their charm, but solo he is a presence, his flow skilled and street smart. Though the dirtiest thing here is not his mouth, but the deep-voiced alter ego "ah" interjections, a rapper trademark to make you feel weak in the knees.

This is a pretty good album. It's got a ton of variety in terms of different kinds of hip-hop. Overall I'd say it has distinctly Wu-Tang feel to it, which is great if you like them. I didn't realize until I opened it, but it's on clear orange vinyl. It's very distinctive and I am a sucker for colored vinyl.

I seem to always get records from Amazon with a slight warp in them, but luckily I have a good cartridge that tracks well even over the bumps.

Some of the songs are really good, but I find others lacking quite a bit. This album is no where near as good as Love Live Asap but a few of the songs are up there. Quite a bit of repetitiveness but I guess that's what Rocky does. The production is really good but sometimes the lyrics aren't as good as usual.

There are some bangers on there though

As a long time fan of hip hop, I must say I wasn't a fan of A$AP Rocky's music until I heard this album. I heard an early mixtape, but was not impressed.

When I first got "Long.Live.A$AP." , I played it in its entirety in my car 5 times straight...and I rarely do that with most albums! It is fantastic.

This album, for the most part is sonically correct...the music behind his lyrics is far and beyond anything I've heard in quite a while...very refreshing and powerful! I could tell immediately from the first track he is not on the same trip as other rappers. I hear hints/inluences of alternative rock/indie rock and electronica throughout, while still keeping it street, chopped & screwed..."Wild For The Night" is a brilliant collaboration between A$AP and Skrillex that just works...who would have imagined that dubstep and hip-hop could be blended so well together??? My favorite track on the whole album!

Lyrically, there is definite brilliance peppered throughout, but at times I felt he could've pushed the envelope more, kind of like he was holding back and kept it dumbed down in order to fit in. "Problems" is an example. It's the album's most commercially viable track featuring Drake and Kendrick Lamar, who both kill their 16 bars.

For the most part A$AP takes chances here and pulls them off supremely-I love the whole album...I say he's up to take Lil' Wayne's crown in a few years if he continues on this path.
