Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Singer-songwriter Catie Curtis's albums always arrive as elegant, but unassuming, presents. Like those of her friend, Mary Chapin Carpenter, who guests here with gorgeous alto harmonies on "Water and Stone," Curtis's songs are beautifully and deceptively well crafted, her production tastefully understated, and her singing so heartbreakingly pure, pained, and devoid of artifice as to suggest she knows not only your secrets, but your soul. The theme that runs through these 12 disarming songs is one of reconnection, both with a lover and with the world, but in a way that makes things better--that makes a difference. "People Look Around," a song about the aftermath of Katrina that Curtis co-wrote with Mark Erelli, won the 2006 International Songwriting Competition grand prize, beating out 15,000 entries from 82 countries. But there are other songs here that might have done the same. Curtis is at her emotional best when she is full of longing that won't be resolved, when she gives voice to feelings that refuse to stay hidden, and when she acts on desires that won't be dismissed. "Find You Now," with its imagery of seeing a potential lover's headlights crawl across her bedroom wall, is a perfect example. But it's the chorus--"Did you drop your flowers / Underneath the bridge / They're floating on a river / Blowing like a kiss"--that destroys you. Despite her 15 years of playing and criss-crossing the country, Curtis has yet to achieve the notoriety and status she deserves. But perhaps deliverance is only on the other side of this Long Night Moon. --Alanna Nash

Product Description
With a dedicated fan base across the U.S. and Europe and with help from Mary Chapin Carpenter and an impressive roster of seasoned players, Catie Curtis’ latest release, Long Night Moon, is one of the most highly-anticipated releases of 2006 for devotés of the singer-songwriter tradition. With ten years of recordings under her belt, the songs on Long Night Moon speak deftly in the voice of a woman who understands fully the joys and frustrations of adulthood without compromising the wit and gentle spirit that have always characterized her work. Backed by a stellar band including John Jennings (Mary Chapin Carpenter), John Sands (Aimee Mann), Mark Rivard (Morphine, Shawn Colvin), Kevin Barry (Paula Cole, Jonatha Brooke). The CD was produced by Lorne Entress.

Featuring: Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kris Delmhorst, Mark Erelli, Erin McKeown and Chris Trapper (The Push Stars).

3.0 out of 5 stars Long Night Moon, January 9, 2007
By L G (Alice Springs, Australia) - See all my reviews
I wasn't wrapped in this album. Catie Curtis has a great voice and the production is excellent, but the lyrics and the subject matter were a bit twee. She's obviously rejoicing in life with her kids and all and giving out messages about how great this planet is and how we need to care for it and each other, but listening to this album was a bit like going to a meeting of happy clappers. It didn't work for this Aussie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Catie lives up to her usual....., January 9, 2007
By Beach Woman (Long Island, N.Y.) - See all my reviews
Catie Curtis lives up to her usual singer songwriter talents in her latest endeavor, Long Night Moon. However, the quality of this album surpasses her other CD's which I would rate at least 4 out of a high 5. Her writing is more mature and insightful and the music more varied. I look forward to the next one and the one following. Catie is a rare gem!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hey Massachusetts, March 4, 2007
By T. F. Hurley "tfhmbr1" (Warminster, PA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've owned (and not frequently listened to) two earlier albums by Catie Curtis. By chance, I've given this one enough listens to get to know it. And I like what I hear. I'm going to go back and get to know the earlier ones in my collection.

This album reflects both a social conscience of trying to make the world a better place when you leave it than it was when you entered it (Passing Through). It also has considerable sass ("Hey California"), a very musical and whimsical comparison of life in Beantown and life in California (more specifically LA).

The album is well produced, with Ms. Curtis' voice the first instrument, but also has a full "background section" of guitar, bass, drums, etc., limited to times when it is appropriate.

I'm not quite sure whether I'd call this a great "singer/songwriter" album or a great "contemporary folk" album. Either way, it's great.
