Old crimes cast long shadows,
By
This review is from: The Long Night (Star Trek Deep Space Nine, No 14) (Mass Market Paperback)
As this novel opens the leader and ruling house of an alien race is fleeing from a bloody revolution. The plan is for the refugees to travel to a far off planet to start anew. They were to go into cold sleep in order to survive the long journey.
The action picks up 800 years later, on Deep Space Nine where word of the missing ship rumors of the missing ship have begun to circulate. The possible discovery of the missing ship has drawn interest from all over the quadrant, fortune hunters who wanted the treasures rumored to be on board, some who wanted to know the fate of the missing ship - for various reasons. Sisko has always had a fascination with the missing ship and eagerly took the Defiant out to investigate the find. Unfortunately it soon became apparent that word had leaked out far beyond the station when other ships began arriving, all intent to stake a claim on the ship. Jake and Nog had accidently discovered just how the information had become so widespread but the discovery had put them in danger. This is a typical tie-in novel, set about halfway through the series. The plot is clever and well crafted. The only sour notes in this otherwise well written work are a surprising lack of attention to the 'canon' set down by the original television episodes. The details are small, careless errors but annoying to fans (and who else would be reading this?).

This review is from: The Long Night (Star Trek Deep Space Nine, No 14) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book occurred a couple of years into the series so the characters were still being fleshed out so the focus was more on finding new missions to write about. While everything was traced back to Cardassian involvement showing the same narrow focus that the first few seasons did. Also the books needed to get broader in scope and characterization. This book was a slow start and the only part that was true to the series was the Quark and Odo conflict.

I couldn't put this book down. It was exciting and plain and simply a great story. I thought the characters were very well written as well.

This is a marvellous addition to the "Deep Space Nine" series; the writing itself is mostly extremely well-done, the characterizations are very good, the pacing is excellent, and the mix of action, drama, and humor is superb. One of the best of the "Deep Space Nine" novels.

DS9 #14 The Long Night - A very well written novel!,

This review is from: The Long Night (Star Trek Deep Space Nine, No 14) (Mass Market Paperback)
Over the years, the husband and wife writing team of Dean Wesley Smith and Kristine Kathryn Rusch have turned out some of the best, most intriguing and enlightening Star Trek tales in the genre and "The Long Night" is no exception to that proven track record. As is standard with their novels, the plot set up and execution is perfect and the pacing of the novel is fast.The cover art for "The Long Night" is somewhat standard for the time in which the novel is published, leaving much to be desired. The premise: Centuries ago, the Supreme Ruler of Jibet fled a democratic uprising taking with him many priceless works of art. Quark, being the good Ferengi that he is, hears of the whereabouts of this treasure and ends up leading Sisko and crew to not only the treasure but the Supreme Ruler himself, in cryogenic suspension. This discovery keenly sparks the interests of Jibet itself and they send a fleet to Deep Space Nine. Dr. Bashir struggles to keep the ruler alive and Jake and Nog discover even deadlier evidence of Cardassian involvement. What follows from there is one of the best Trek novels written by these authors and most certainly one of the best numbered Deep Space Nine novels to date that I highly recommend to any and all fans of Star Trek fiction. {ssintrepid}

This review is from: The Long Night (Star Trek Deep Space Nine, No 14) (Mass Market Paperback)
Star Trek: Deep Space 9 The Long Night written by Dean Wesley Smith and Kristine Kathryn Rusch is and advenure-mystery book as Commander Benjamin Sisko and his crew try to reign in Quarks greed.Yes, Quark the large eared Ferengi has found out about a large sum of priceless works of art from a ruler, who centuries long ago, took with him to exile from the planet Jibet after a democartic uprising. Doctor Bashir has an ardous task of keeping Supreme Ruler of Jibet alive, who has been preserved in cryogenic suspension for all of these years. Jake and Nog uncover a Cardassian plot of treachery only to involve Deep Space Nine crew. There is unrest on the planet Jibet and it threatens the well being of Deep Space Nine as Jibet launches an armada. There is action-adventure and your reading will move quickly as the action mounts to a fever pitch and Deep Space Nine is about to be destroyed. I can't devulge the ending but you will be thoroughly be entertained through out the book as old favorites as Dax, Jake, Nog, O'Brien, Bashir, and Odo all come toghther for an action-packed adventure.

Thrilling from the beginning to the end.
All characters excellently written. And a very
good amount of interesting special effect scenes
(which were great in my imagination :-)). That's
what I like on Star Trek! I wish this would
become a DS9 movie.
