The great merit of this book resides in its close reading of parliametary debates and scoflaw phamphlets of what is commonly refered to as the "Cavilier Parliament." In addition to its masterful reconstruction of events of that parliament Patterson discusses the nature of parliamentary sources and how we "got parliamentary history". I was interested in this book because I am researching my dissertation on memory and parliamentary behavior in this period; I found the bibliography extremely helpful. I have to warn anyone potentially interested in this book however...it's a very boring read. I realize this is a subjective and superficial comment but it was really hard for me to finish, and i'm a historian:)
