The Long Ride Home,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Long Ride Home (DVD)
It's great to see a movie out that's basically family friendly. Yeah, it's got it's Western violence, but it skips the major violence, sex, and swear words...most movies don't need it! I thought the cast was great! It's amazing how many stars were in it! The cinematography and music were phenominal! It had suspence, mystery, and romance with a moral dilema. I certainly recommend it. It's nice to see Western with a different twist.

A family classic,

If you're looking for lots of foul language, sex and violence, this isn't the movie for you. If you want a suspenseful Western that the entire family can enjoy, The Long Ride Home is a must-have. Hollywood doesn't turn out too many movies I can give an unqualified recommendation to, but the lack of filth in this film makes it stand apart from the rest. Kudos to the makers of this movie!

Excellent classic western,

The movie was great entertainment in the style of the classic western. The storyline has a message and delivers it with panache. It takes a lot of guts to develop a script with any theme at all in today's jaded movie industry. This movie not only has a theme, but it is a moral theme and it is delivered with power and class.

What A Western!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Long Ride Home (DVD)
This is one of the best western of this era. There really isn't all that much violence except for when Jack Cole torments Laura. All the actors were great at this part. Randy Travis is a better singer than actor but his riding was great! Kids should enjoy this.

Average acting, yes, but a good, clean film,

I almost didn't buy this DVD because of the negative reviews I read here and on another site; however, I'm thankful for the few positive reviews that made me decide to give it a chance. I agree that the acting isn't the greatest, but it's not as terrible as some reviewers make it out to be either, with two exceptions: 1) Eric Roberts' marriage proposal is as hokey as can be, and 2) the actor playing Abel Hart/(the original) Jack Cole seems to have studied Bruce Dern's character from the old John Wayne movie "The Cowboys" and then decided to take that character to the utmost degree (in other words, his acting gets to be a bit over the top).
Beyond that, the story line is an interesting one, though I wish the background to Randy Travis' character and his relationship with his family had been developed a bit better (but I understand that this was a made-for-TV movie and they had time constraints). Primarily, I appreciate the fact that this story had a moral and lacked profanity. Ernest Borgnine's character calling Jack Cole "a beast" is far preferable to any of the profane names that he would be called in most Hollywood movies. Needless profanity and sex scenes spoil my enjoyment of many an (otherwise) good movie, so I can still enjoy films like this one in spite of its shortcomings.

Couldn't finish it...,

This was a complete disappointment as a Western. It was like 90 minutes of Vacation Bible School. If you like Westerns a la "Lonesome Dove" you won't enjoy this.

This was a great film for grandkids and younger kids. The acting was NOT great but for entertainment it was better than the foul mouth bloody movies that are being made these days. I can agree that Roberts has not played a decent part in any movie I have seen of his and I did wonder HOW the female lead got the part since she was SO bad....must have been a relative. At less than $5 delivered it was cheaper than rental so I can't fuss!

One star only because it's a western....,

...and has horses in it. This is one of the worst westerns I've seen. Namby-pamby acting (Randy Travis, you ain't no cowboy!) and whoever played the lead female (wife of Randy) gave one of the worst performances I've ever seen. Her reaction to her cut hair was laughable! (Maybe the actors were at the mercy of this VERY bad script.) The "villain" was a stitch and overacted so badly that I think Snidely Whiplash would have been an improvement. The boy was equally bad and seemed to be sleeping through the most "dangerous" parts of the movie. I found myself laughing when I shouldn't have been and there was no suspense whatsoever--unless you wonder why you're watching this in the first place. I wasted my money on this one (thankfully I bought it at a reduced price--which should have told me something right there!)For a really good western look to Silverado, Lonesome Dove, The Sacketts, Last Stand at Sabre River, etc. (By the way, when are those last two coming out in DVD? And what about Conagher?? C'mon guys!! Get on the stick!) Final words: stay away from this one!!

As a western buff i almost bought this movie before i saw it, glad i didn't. This is a soap opera western. Eric Roberts i can't believe you said all those mushy lines with a straight face, i hope the pay was good! There are plenty of great westerns at Amazon, just don't bother with this one.
