5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, April 14, 2010

Readers of crime stories taking place in picturesque New York City can wait no longer. A voice has emerged telling the story like it is. Or at least, as it likely was for the unfortunate in the underbelly.
Robinson paints characters as brash as they are likeable. The weavings of the plot will make you think and force you to take notes.
The thinking man has written a novel for the thinking classes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, great pace, May 5, 2010

I really enjoyed reading this book. I couldn't put it down as it was fast paced, gritty and fun to read. The main character, Jake, solicits equal doses of contempt and empathy as he races through 1970s New York on a quest for a better life. I think Mr. Robinson should continue writing this kind of story. Well done sir.

Robinson's first novel is a good read. It's not great, but it's good. Crime fiction tends to read like police procedurals or pulp fiction. Robinson pleasantly avoids the pitfalls of both genres.

A Long Slow Screw tends to lean toward the pulp end of things but it doesn't suffer from the standard cliches. There are 4 characters the drive the overall narrative: Jake, Joe, Blue and Easy. Admittedly, Jake is the most likable of the bunch but I found Joe and Blue to be a bit more complicated. Their characters developed with a bit more subtlety. The narrative turns toward Jake's upbringing and childhood seemed abrupt and rattled the story. I found myself re-reading the sections where these historical tidbits were placed.

Overall, I liked the book. I'm a fan of Eugene's music and he's a cool guy too. It was nice to read his book out of want rather than feeling like the obligatory fan. If you're looking for Oxbow on paper though, you're looking in the wrong place. Eugene is more than a front man and a fighter...and he exemplifies this rather well in his first novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Evocative, elegant and brutal, February 2, 2010
This review is from: A Long Slow Screw (Paperback)
Robinson, rock terrorizer by night, seems to have turned his hand brilliantly by day to crime fiction with this one. I am not an afficionado of the form, so I may have missed any echoes of Spillane etc. However what I did get was a thrilling ride through some terrifying scenarios, populated by unnervingly warm, well-drawn characters. The writing is spare and yet occasionally very beautiful, particularly when conjuring up the bestial, unforgiving yet enlivening city. The problem with this book, if there is any, is its lack of a moral compass. There doesn't seem to be any guiding light of narrative voice, purely a sensitive and sensual narrator. This is actually probably a good thing if you ask me.

This book reads like a more violent, crime thriller version of a Hubert Selby Jr. novel.
