5.0 out of 5 stars A Tour de Force of Brotzmann's Life in Free Jazz March 5, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Mr. Peter Brotzmann curated this several-day event in Germany as a commemoration of his seventieth birthday. While not properly a retrospective, Brotzmann revisits several musical groups he has worked with over the years, but newly combines players as well. He performs on most of the pieces, but lays out on a few. It is heartening to find him laying with his guitar player son, Caspar on one cut.

While little known in the United States, Brotzmann has been a titan of free jazz in Europe, Japan, and elsewhere for nearly fifty years. He retains his endless energy, resourcefulness in wildly different settings, and his adventuresome and sometimes supernatural playing. No one can elicit as many varied tonalities from reed instruments than Peter Brotzmann. He can wail, over-blow, create multiphonics, screech, whistle, hum, chip, moan, roar, and blow the most melodic lines you can imagine. And he does this on tenor, alto, and bass saxophone, as well as on clarinet and the rarely-played targato. He blows with acoustic and electric instruments, with fellow Germans, Americans, and Japanese. He is, in a word, a force of nature who speaks a language that transcends nature itself.

Let us congratulate Mr. Peter Brotzmann for so many years so well spent in a musical form that can punch the life out of so many lesser talents with lesser grit. Brotzmann is still standing, blowing, and irradiating the world with sonic wonder. Bravo!

This box from Trost Records is a stunning document of the 25th annual Unlimited-festival in Wels, Austria, recordings of a series of concerts on November 3-6, 2011. Peter Brotzmann was invited to curate the festival. What resulted was an astonishing array of musicians, including many ensembles that featured Brotz, and some that did not, all collaborators of the German free improv saxophonist who turned 70 in 2011. As the liner notes put it: "Not a retrospective, but a representation of the contemporary musical spheres that Brotzmann and his comrades are investigating today." I love it when people use the term comrades! Read more ›

My favorite, varied, music collection had been the "Wildflower, Loft Sessions"Wildflowers: The New York Loft Jazz Sessions. This has now taken the pedestal. Any cut stands on its own. Fantastic variety of instrumentation, flavor and pace. The programming makes the 5 CD set a joy to listen through.
