Strong Stuff For Adults Only., March 14, 2007
I love the whole story! So there! Ms Lamb used the 3 plot devices present in Long Surrender over and over again in many of her books over the following years but never to such great effect. And the devices are sooo offensive too! The story works because the first time Selina and Ashley got married it was because they loved one another. So the pimping brother, the violence and the frigidity are all necessary for their second attempt at happiness to work out. And how many romances feature 2 suicide attempts? The ending is fantastic. The heroine risks her self-respect in order to prove her love for her husband. Believe me, Selina is more than a match for Ashley's anger. I read this in the 1970s and I read it again in the 21st century. The story remains enthralling. Apparently Ms Lamb (RIP) wrote this novel in one weekend. One day a Mills & Boon author will receive a deserved gong. I hope it will be Ms Lamb.

Awful awful wouldn't even it one star-minus, January 7, 2011
Pure awful, here is the thing with Harlequin romance heroes they maybe jerks but they try to redeem themselves by the end of the book. The hero Ashely Dent is a disgusting jerk. He knows the heroine has had a traumatic past and yet he tries to have sex with her when she refuse he slaps her! I can never forgive that and he knows why shes like that, eventually HE has sex with her- not they- which she clarifies. He was awful and there were no redeeming qualities in him. The story didn't have a good plot, I picked it up from the free books box outside the library. Boring, dull plot not worth reading even if you are bored out of your mind. I'm mad at myself for reading it. Charlotte Lamb being a woman labeling this as "romance" gives her little stance in my eyes. There is nothing romantic about rape, being dominated and raped is whole different thing. Rape ruins a woman's life and mind, it damages her soul and you can't learn to love your rapist.

hated the hero but..., April 26, 2011
The story was good, it started with a strong captivating story I really wanted Selina to find happiness after all that happened to her but Ashley was not good enough for her. I have read many books where the hero's are jerks and hard to like but this one I just couldn't. Charlotte Lamb should have changed his attitute in the story once he learned the truth from her brother but he continue to physically and emotionally abuse her. I liked Selina's story and this had the potential to be a great romance but I could not buy their love a the end.
