Editorial Reviews

Review

“A straight-talking guide to choosing and paying for a nursing home, assisted living site or home care.” U.S. News & Report "Offers keys to choosing the right long-term care plan to protect assets... this is packed with keys updated to reflect the latest laws and resources, and is a key reference for any general collection." Midwest Book Review ”This book offers great advice about selecting a nursing home.” Los Angeles Times "As the baby-boomer generation enters the golden years, many are faced with the need for long-term medical care. Although the field of long-term care has grown considerably over the last few decades, many seniors and their children struggle with finding and paying for this care. This book is intended to aid in the long-term care decision making process. The author, an attorney specializing in senior citizen law, shows readers how to assess the individual’s specific long-term care needs, get the most out of Medicare and Medicaid, how to evaluate different care providers, and decide which of the many providers offer the best care that they can afford. The author also addresses the special needs of patients with Alzheimer’s as well as how to spot and prevent elder fraud." Eithne O'Leyne, Editor Ringgold, Inc. ProtoView

Good enough that I'm looking at more from Nolo press. The best discussion I've yet found on LTC insurance (chapter 11 of the sixth edition that i have in front of me as i await delivery of 10th edition, and i believe [without proof] that the insurance chapter is sold separately by Nolo but from the table of contents appears to follow the referenced chapter topic-by-topic. Nolo press doesn't date the stand-alone on LTC insurance).

Separate chapters on 1) Making Decisions re LTC 2) Home Care 3) Organized Senior Residences 4) LTC Facilities 5) Care for Alzheimers 6) Hospice Care 7) Medicare and Veteran's Benefits 8) Medicaid 9) Asset protection for Medicaid users 10) Protecting Choices about medical care and finances, 11) LTC Insurance 12) Elder Fraud. About 30 pages of "Appendices" that include many references (that is, URLs and addresses). Decent index.

Clear writing, well edited without typos or other annoyances. Very common-sense advice from an attorney well-versed on elder topics, good for both elderly and for their adult children. Current edition (October 2014) is 10th; not sure how much updating is done with each revision but revisions come every few years (1990, 1993, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008?, 2010, 2012?, 2014 where the question marks indicate 'guesses based on interpolation'). Chapter 11 on LTC Insurance has clearly been updated because it references changes in LTC Insurance that have taken place during the period after the first edition. Shortcoming: there's really not much you can say about "How to Pay for it" since neither Medicare nor Medicaid is very useful (Medicaid is somewhat, if you're basically broke, which happily does not apply to me so i didn't bother doing more than skim that part).

No one wants to think about needing long term care for self or loved one, but reality cannot be escaped. I have worked in this environment as an RN, and have seen first-hand the devastation that can befall a family. While my perspective varies from that of the attorney who formulated and keeps updating this book, I know that the information here can smooth things for overwhelmed families. Brick and mortar facilities, as well as home care and hospice agencies have social workers available, but being aware and prepared is best for your own mental health as well as your pocket book. This book will be an invaluable asset to you if you apply the knowledge gained.
Be aware, however, that this book is aimed to the needs of older individuals.
Narrator Jack has a clear, well-modulated speaking voice with clear enunciation which enhances the material presented by the author.

Excellent resource that gives many options for help with medical needs. It is NOT a pitch to buy "long term care insurance," though it does cover this topic which might be appropriate for some people. My elderly mother is presently in a long term care facility and this book would have been helpful had I known about it. Instead, I spent five years going to a caregivers support group & finally going to an Elder Law attorney. I recently bought the book to better plan for my own future needs and then was comfortable with the decision to NOT buy "long term care insurance" for myself. Only other advice is that once you read the book, don't overlook the value of going to a really good Elder Law attorney in the state you live in so as to not make mistakes as different states handle Medicaid differently.
