Book Description

Jim Brumm’s Long-Term Thinking for a Short-Sighted World focuses on the problems we face today that share a common, rarely discussed theme: a lack of long-term thinking. The book explores examples—past and present—of humanity pursuing short-term gains at the expense of our long-term well being. Topics include energy, debt, consumerism, agriculture and our skewed perceptions of time.

“In today’s world we are grappling at every turn with an increasing energy shortage, food production systems that struggle to feed increasing millions, environmental problems that threaten our survival, a debt crisis that is crippling individuals and governments, and so much more. All of these problems come with their own unique challenges and examined on their own they may seem completely different from each other, but they share one common, rarely discussed hidden thread that runs through the center of each and binds them together: a lack of long-term thinking. We’re very bad long-term thinkers.”

Jim delivers a message of hope, helping to answer the question, “How can I live my life in a way that brings satisfaction, balance, happiness, and a sense of value? In other words, how can I be part of the solution?” He suggests positive ways to improve our ability to embrace a larger vision of our place in the world.

Conversational, provocative, witty and often laugh-aloud funny, Long-Term Thinking for a Short-Sighted World will inspire readers who are seeking ways to realign priorities and re-examine what brings true, long-term happiness and sustainability.

About the Author

Jim Brumm has been a writer and editor for over twenty-five years. He has founded and published four magazines, and authored a newspaper column in California’s Napa Valley wine country. He has worked as the staff writer at a Web design firm and at an environmental restoration company. During the 1970s Jim joined the navy and served in submarines where he was put on report for “skylarking,” defined by annoyed officers as “an intolerable lack of seriousness.” Currently he lives in Santa Rosa, California, where he works as a freelance writer and tries his best to adopt a Zen-like attitude when it comes to mowing the lawn. He feeds the birds even when there’s a sign that says “Don’t feed the birds.” He is an award-winning songwriter and performs his original music throughout Sonoma County. He rides a Vespa.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Common Sense Approach June 25, 2012
Reading Jim Brumm's, "Long-Term Thinking for a Short-Sighted World" not only points out the social and monetary damage created by a profit driven corporate society, it provides a common sense path back to sanity with practical solutions and strategies aimed at restoring a sustainable lifestyle that "thinks globally and acts locally".

5.0 out of 5 stars If you care about our planet, you MUST read this book! October 19, 2012
This book is a must-read for anyone who cares about the state of our planet is in today. War, strife, turmoil, global warming... it has all been avoidable. Jim Brumm paints a very clear picture on how we arrived at the crisises surrounding us today and why and how we must mindfully move forward if we plan on leaving a habitable planet for our future children. With many painful and vivid examples of the mistakes our species has made along the way, anyone who reads this book (and doesn't have a heart of stone) will be affected. Clearly the author did vast amounts of research as he generously substantiates each of the issues he presents by shedding light on the mindlessness and greed that caused the mess in the first place. All hope is not lost, however! Brumm presents concrete ways that we can affect change and restore harmony to the planet simply by making conscious decisions based on compassion and mindfulness.

My only question is why hasn't this book been written before? As presented, it seems so obvious that we should be where we are today!

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Is Not Only Timely, it is Already Overdue October 4, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I don't believe you can read this book without beginning to think about issues we've been guilty of turning away from even as we enjoyed "right now" benefits without considering how these same benefits will effect us long-term. There are some hard facts to consider here; either we change our way of acting or we will find ourselves in serious trouble before we go much further. This book is not only timely, it is already overdue. Good for Jim for taking the time and doing the research to bring this to our attention, and in such a readable (and often humorous) account of our foibles. But even more importantly, he doesn't leave us in a state of fear or feeling there's just no use. Instead, he offers intelligent, workable solutions that we can start using right now. A must-read for everybody young and old. And right now!

5.0 out of 5 stars What an education! What a Ride! September 2, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
One thinks one has heard it all but then a book like "Long Term Thinking..." comes along and takes you further on the journey to awareness. Jim Brumm's new book covers a lot of ground and justly so because our current world is spread out like a big `ooze' so it is hard to figure out what is up or down. Jim has done a lot of thinking and his vision sweeps the reader right along to clearly stated options- a very enlightening and enjoyable ride. Thanks, Jim.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book for our Time August 17, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Jim Brumm's "Long-Term Thinking for a Short-Sighted World" couldn't come at a better time. In fact, it is so overdue one has to wonder why no one was thinking more long term 10 or 20 years ago and written this book. We could've avoided so many of today's global problems (the Iraqi war -- the lack of forethought and an exit strategy is only one example). Brumm presents COMMON SENSE solutions to our lackadaisical or non-existent "exit strategies" when we act without thinking. Every member of Congress on both sides of the aisle should be reading this book. It's a known fact they don't read most bills they pass which has caused economic and social upheaval here and on a global scale. At least "Long-Term Thinking" is an EASY AND ENTERTAINING READ -- even Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas might understand and benefit from it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for humans! August 6, 2012
By JMikell
Jim Brumm's book, Long-Term Thinking for a Short-Sighted World is an eye opener. After finishing the book, you may find yourself seeing everything through the lens of long-term thinking, and when you do, you'll see why this book is so timely and relevant to today's world. With profit driving nearly everything our society does, we are putting corporate interests ahead of global stewardship, and avoiding anything that asks us change our lives for the betterment of the future. Brumm shows how by embracing the long term, we can make better choices in our individual lives and choose a path that is sustainable for the long run. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book sticks with you. August 6, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I can't seem to get some of the examples laid out in this book out of my head. The Borneo cat drop is one of them. This whole book is filled with food for thought, yet it's so completely readable. It changes the way you look at your own actions and at the world. The author covers agriculture, energy, consumerism and much more and simply shows how short term thinking has created so many problems. The writing style is conversational, but the message is important and can be applied to just about everything we do in our lives and in our society. There are so many wonderful stories and anecdotes that apply to your life, our lives, long-term thinking, our society and government that you won't be able to stop thinking about it. That's what's happened to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Does. August 3, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
With this subject matter, Jim Brumm's book could have been a dry, standard lecture. No way. Here is a cogent, often light-hearted, amusing, and enlightening book, filled with easy-to-read-and-understand language. The many excellent examples of ways we can change our lives for the better, and the world for the better, are laid before us like a smorgasbord, rather than being pounded into us like a stern lecture from some guru on high. If you care about anyone or anything, ya gotta read this book!
