Product Description

HOT PEPPERS: When Wilbur Scoville first devised a means to test the heat of peppers, his hottest entry then came in at 20,000 units. Habanero and Thai chilies can go as high as 60,000. Compare that to the sweet bell pepper at zero. When hot peppers are consumed, capsaicinoids bind with pain receptors in the mouth and throat that are responsible for sensing heat. Once activated by the capsaicinoids, these receptors send a message to the brain that the person has consumed something hot. The brain responds to the burning sensation by raising the heart rate, increasing perspiration and release of endorphins. Hot peppers should be eaten with caution!

Long Thin Cayenne Pepper: Hot and very prolific. Cayenne has thin 5-6 long pointed and wrinkled dark green fruit that matures to a deep red. Excellent fresh, in sauces, and easy to dry to be ground to a powder for a spicy-hot condiment. Each plant provides a bountiful harvest.

Well now that frost has hit these and they are gone, I figure I can review them. I received these peppers, and others, very timely and in good condition. (VA not to far from Ohio though, so keep that in consideration) I lightly hardened them since I didn't know their previous living conditions. Some of these plants actually had peppers growing when I got them in the mail! The main thing I will say is they need immediate support. They will grow very tall but do not have as thick of a stalk as some of the other pepper plants out there. They plants produced quite a bit and the one I brought inside is doing very well. The only odd thing I noticed was that the sizes of the peppers between plants seemed a bit different. Half had large, thick, longer peppers, while the others had "curlier" peppers that did not straighten out. Maybe I received a few different varieties?

With that said, I would buy from Hirt's again.

If you would like to see how these plants did, I have some pictures of the plants and of the peppers at this location:

The Thai, Habanero, Scotch Bonnet, Tabasco, and Cayenne are from Hirt's.

So my wife bought these a little over 6 weeks ago. When they came in the mail they were yellow and all the leaves fell off. My wife immediately got them in a window and didn't water them for about a week (they were soaked when we got them. But that is to be expected.) They slowly sprouted new leaves within about 2 weeks, and now they are so full and bushy and lively and even have 7 peppers at just 6 inches high! they are resilient little plants, and we were so excited to get 5 plants instead of the 4 listed. My wife loves growing peppers... and Cayenne is her favorite... She adores these little plants. Great buy... Definitely a great buy.

Well they were sent and the plants looked amazing, However upon plant them the top half died off. They were resilent enough to come back, but the out put will be low and small.

Plants arrived fine, but haven't grown much and no peppers yet. Have a few flowers but plants are tiny. Not sure if it's the plants or me not knowing how to grow them.
