A memorable and enjoyable "window in time",
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Long and Uncertain Journey: The 27,000 Mile Voyage of Vasco Da Gama (Great Explorers) (Hardcover)
A Long And Uncertain Journey is the entertaining and informative picturebook story of Vasco da Gama's 27,000 mile exploratory journey in 1497. Sailing to discover a route to China just five years after Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama discovered what Columbus had not -- a sea route from Europe to China. Elizabeth Goodman blends a compelling, dramatic narrative with Tom McNeely's superbly drawn watercolors giving readers age 8 to 18 a memorable and enjoyable "window in time" to one of the truly outstanding feats in history.

This review is from: A Long and Uncertain Journey: The 27,000 Mile Voyage of Vasco Da Gama (Great Explorers) (Hardcover)
In a span of little more than a quarter century, European explores discovered the Americas, found a sea route to India and circumnavigated the world. It was an extraordinary period of human history. Of the great explorers, Christopher Columbus rightly receives the most coverage. But the voyages of the sailors Vasco de Gama and Ferdinand Megellan were much more extraordinary. They covered far greater distances and they experienced much more compelling adventures.
"A Long and Uncertain Journey" is part of the wonderful "Great Explorers" series. All of the series' books are both well written and illustrated. This series is geared towards older children but nevertheless will also be enjoyed by parents. This is a great book and I highly recommend it.

This review is from: A Long and Uncertain Journey: The 27,000 Mile Voyage of Vasco Da Gama (Great Explorers) (Hardcover)
This book is packed with facts about Vasco da Gama and offers quite a bit of incidental information on what sea voyages were like at that time. My one complaint is that the book seems dense with information, the pages packed from top to bottom with type, and at times transitions between paragraphs just aren't there. Nevertheless, a book worth reading.
