Editorial Reviews

Review

When Matt Mattingly walked across America in 1990 he sent home weekly reports. The Union Democrat printed them along with a map showing his progress between New York City and the Golden Gate Bridge. But no amount of urging or badgering would get him to put the better anecdotal stuff into his reports. -- From the Publisher

Matt's book takes you on a walk from the East Coast Home to California. He lets you experience the joys, the pains, and the people he meets as he walks across the country. They are far different from those you see on the nightly news. They are real human beings. Matt has no agenda except to walk to his goal and the story has an honest voice that is a refreshing pleasure to read.

I had the honor of meeting the author of this book, Matt Mattingly, near the end of his stay in a Fresno, CA, hospital and about of week before his death in July 2010. He and I shared a hospital room for several days and during that time (when you discuss the many aspects of one's life) we talked about his solo walk at age 60 from New York to San Francisco in 1992. He was a fascinating person and felt that he had a story to tell about America and it's people. I immediately purchased this book when I returned home, and received it in the mail about a week after I attended his funeral. It is an easy read and interesting tale about one man's travels in our country.
