Confusing but worth the effort, June 13, 2001

This review is from: Long Walk Home (Hardcover)
When I first started Long Walk Home I nearly put it down due to the massive amount of invented language it contains. The author seemed particulary caught up in the definitions of gender, particularly the bisexual hermaphrodite or asexual beings in this book. The first chapter is a little awkward at points which in combination with the confusing language makes it hard to get through. This is hard core fantasy fiction.
I recommend sticking with it, though. The story of this book is well thought out and at times compelling. Most of the characters are well-developed and consistent throughout the book which is a feat in itself. This is a good first effort that has those hints of a future accomplished author in it. It is an opportunity to watch an artist develop and mature her talent. I suggest taking advantage.
I would read the rest of this series were it already published.
