About the Author

Iceberg Slim, also known as Robert Beck, was born in Chicago in 1918 and was initiated into the life of the pimp at age eighteen. He briefly attended the Tuskegee Institute but dropped out to return to the streets of the South Side, where he remained, pimping until he was forty-two. After several stints in jail he decided to give up the life and turned to writing. Slim folded his life into the pages of seven books based on his life. Catapulted into the public eye, Slim became a new American hero, known for speaking the truth whether that truth was ugly, sexy, rude, or blunt.

I read this book some years ago when I was quite young. Reading it now as a mature person who has much more understanding of the socioeconomic, psychological factors that affect the Black experience, made me look at the writing from a totally different perspective. The writer's use of "street" language is excellent. I was not even offended by the use of the "N" word.

I might lose my feminist card for this but I am enjoying reading the Iceberg Slim books! I have devoured Pimp, Trick Baby, and Long White Con. The stories are like a snapshot into another place in time with current relevance as some of his subtle references to OUR socio-economic state of affairs rings true to date. Swap out Pimping and the Con Game for the drugs and Voila: Iceberg Slim's tales would be catapulted into the 1990's moving forward through present day. Mama Black Widow is next on my list!

Slim put it down like a stone in the water baby. Heavy. Real heavy. You feel the grip of con drawing you in page by page.

The young writers really need to read Robert Beck (Iceberg Slim). He is so funny, even when he is writing about the most horrible acts. His sex descriptions are priceless. Don't miss the extra chapter at the end - about the difficulties of old pimps.

A little old but good read and very interesting. It is truly the game in action now as back then.
