Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Maureen McGovern's recording career began in 1972 with her #1 chart-topping, Oscar-winning Gold Record "The Morning After," which earned her a Grammy nomination for "Best New Artist." She replicated this success two years later with another Oscar-winning Gold Record, "We May Never Love Like This Again," then made history in 1975 as the first singer to introduce two Oscar-nominated songs in the same year. To date, her career has spanned thirty-five years, including recordings, concerts, Broadway, films, television, radio and composing. With a voice that defies categorization – from a jazzy, warm pop register to a crystalline coloratura – she has earned a reputation for being one of America's most popular artists. Now her newest album, A LONG AND WINDING ROAD, finds Maureen reconnecting with the "Baby Boomer" songs that inspired her beginnings as a folk singer in the late ’60s. The album features an eclectic mix of classic and evocative tunes from such groundbreaking singer-songwriters as Joni Mitchell, Jimmy Webb, Paul Simon, Carole King, James Taylor, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Laura Nyro, whose songs comprise, as The New York Times has noted, "the second half of the Great American Songbook." It’s an introspective collection that’s at once rousing, powerful, and always deeply moving, featuring timeless songs that will speak to music-lovers of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars "A Long and Winding Road" - Well worth the journey!, May 9, 2008
Although I am surprised that I am the first to write a review, I want to take this opportunity to encourage Maureen's fans old and new to invest in a copy or two of the new album "A Long and Winding Road." Some songs are more familiar than others. All songs are just delightful! Maureen does a wonderful job of paying tribute to music that was formational for her and for I'm sure, many of us. The arrangements by Jeff Harris honor the originals yet allow Maureen to put her personal touch on them. Maureen has once again used her beautiful instrument to interpret these songs in a way that breaths new life into the lyrics. Her skill with these songs allows the listener to hear them afresh and walk away with a new sense of their meaning. This is not an album filled with contemporary vocal gymnastics. Rather, it's an album filled with strong, clear and great singing. Because these songs date back to when Maureen first began her career, I am struck by the fact that after all these years, the voice of a young Maureen can be heard while the maturity of her years of experience allow for wonderful shading. It's been a long time since we fans were treated to a full studio album. It was worth the wait. Thank you Maureen!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good effort by McGovern, June 18, 2008
You have to start with the concept that whatever Maureen McGovern does, she does very well. And this CD is no exception. While I'm not crazy about some of the selections, I will say that this is the first time I've really listened to all the lyrics to "The Times They Are a-Changin'." I'm a generation removed from Bob Dylan and never understood his lyrics nor his popularity, so it's enjoyable to finally "get" these lyrics. McGovern's strong, commanding yet lyrical voice is such a pleasure to hear.
