"A Long and Winding Road" - Well worth the journey!,
By
This review is from: A Long and Winding Road (Audio CD)
Although I am surprised that I am the first to write a review, I want to take this opportunity to encourage Maureen's fans old and new to invest in a copy or two of the new album "A Long and Winding Road." Some songs are more familiar than others. All songs are just delightful! Maureen does a wonderful job of paying tribute to music that was formational for her and for I'm sure, many of us. The arrangements by Jeff Harris honor the originals yet allow Maureen to put her personal touch on them. Maureen has once again used her beautiful instrument to interpret these songs in a way that breaths new life into the lyrics. Her skill with these songs allows the listener to hear them afresh and walk away with a new sense of their meaning. This is not an album filled with contemporary vocal gymnastics. Rather, it's an album filled with strong, clear and great singing. Because these songs date back to when Maureen first began her career, I am struck by the fact that after all these years, the voice of a young Maureen can be heard while the maturity of her years of experience allow for wonderful shading. It's been a long time since we fans were treated to a full studio album. It was worth the wait. Thank you Maureen!

Good effort by McGovern,

You have to start with the concept that whatever Maureen McGovern does, she does very well. And this CD is no exception. While I'm not crazy about some of the selections, I will say that this is the first time I've really listened to all the lyrics to "The Times They Are a-Changin'." I'm a generation removed from Bob Dylan and never understood his lyrics nor his popularity, so it's enjoyable to finally "get" these lyrics. McGovern's strong, commanding yet lyrical voice is such a pleasure to hear.

Long Awaited From Maureen!!,
By Daniel (Virginia) - See all my reviews

My prayers have been answered with this release- McGovern singing the great hits of the sixties and seventies. Now, if 20th Century will just release her breakthru album "The Morning After"(1972)on Compact Disc everyone will be happy(Possibly there are some legal issues or ownership rights preventing this, but hope they clear it up soon).

BRILLIANT!,
This review is from: A Long and Winding Road (Audio CD)
I can not write enough adjectives to praise Maureen McGovern's latest recording. It is simply sensational. I can not wait to hear her perform it live. I hope this is the first of more artistic efforts using the music of the 60's and 70's as her medium. Buy the CD, download it, do whatever you must do but listen to this performance! You will not be disappointed.

salute to 70s,
By Mark Thomas (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Long and Winding Road (Audio CD)
Maureen has chosen the best possible tact to recognize these gems of the 60s and 70s. It would have been pointless and impossible to capture the original intense feelings of the original recordings by trying to record them as well orchstrated covers. This is the year 2008 and the most honnest way to salute these songs has been not to try and recreate them - rather to do it in a more detached manner - simple voice and minimal orchestra.

Maureen is still the DIVA when it comes to singing all these type of genres she has been doing for the past 30+ years :) I was lucky to have front row seats at a concert she did in Irving Texas that she did before releasing this CD and it was all the songs .. who ever thought Racoon Song was a misfit, she was just having some lyrical fun with it, I think when she recorded this CD it was from one of the shows if I am not mistaken. still she does no wrong, still great as ever and always will be :)

Impressive talent and flawless performance,

Folk singer Maureen McGovern is a consummate and accomplished performer whose career began in the late 60s and is still going strong today. Her latest album is "A Long and Winding Road" in which she showcases her impressive talent and flawless performance with an eclectic mix of eighteen songs that are reflective, melodic, and superlative examples of American popular culture as presented in the folk tradition of the last forty years. The pieces comprising this simply outstanding and highly recommended album include All I Want/America; The Times They area-Cahngin'; The Circle Game; The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feeling Groovy); Cowboy; The Coming of the roads; Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?; Shed a Little Light/Carry It On/ The Fiddle and the Drum; Fire and Rain; Rocky Raccoon; Let It Be; By the Time I Get to Phoenix; MacArthur Park; The Moon's A Harsh Mistress; And When I Die; Imagine; and the title piece, The Long and Winding Road.
