5.0 out of 5 stars "I just gave him lesson one,the lessons get harder as they go along."--Longarm, November 22, 2007
This review is from: Longarm 324: Longarm and Kilgore's Revenge (Paperback)
A great episode in this great series! As there is no real Tabor Evans, the episodes are written by different writers. Obviously, they have different styles and backgrounds, I definitely prefer the fast action stories with lots of interesting, well developed characters, lots of good down to earth talk and expressions, lots of shootouts and fight to the death struggles.Good depictions of Old West towns, and mountains deserts, trains,Indians, stages and tough challenges.Couple all that with a straight forward adventurous storyline, and in my opinion you get a western the way they should be written. This episode has all that and more;making it a great read that you wish wouldn't end ,and hard to put down. After all, this is a Western Fiction series, not a Mystery series, which we too often get.
I don't know if many readers pay much attention to the covers;but I do.There has been some excellent artwork over the years;but sometimes the covers drive me around the bend. This one for example.I kept looking for the guy in the dark hat and beard in the center, and didn't come across anyone in the story that resembeled him. He did look somewhat familiar;and Lo and behold!! he is also on the cover of Episode 322,Longarm and the Missing Mistress;identical, hat, shirt, coat and beard.I assumed the older gent with the pipe was Gordon Maxwell;but hold on,isn't that the same guy as on the other cover ,but with a hat and different shirt, Come on,publishers, you can do better than that!!!
In the early days of this series ,the artwork was far superior to what we get today. We are way overdue for a shakeup in the art department.
Along with administering some Western style justice,Longarm sometimes gives out some pretty god advice to people who could use ir;as we see here:
"It's all right folks to gamble, which is legal. And it's all right for folks to drink liquor. But it isn't all right to do both to excess. And it's never all right to insult a lady."
