This review is from: Longarm and the Angel of Inferno (Longarm, No. 208) (Paperback)
This April 1996 episode of Longarm finds our hero entering Inferno ,A rizona Territory. He had been after an outlaw,Malcolm Barns,a skillful con man and counterfeit artist. Seems he lost his trail and Longarm decided it wasn't worth risking an international incident by pursuing him across the border. So,Longarm decides to rest of a bit in this little railway water stop, before heading back to Denver.
What appeared to be a quiet restover, turns into two day series of fast-action ,shootouts, crooked Lawmen, local bullies,a disgruntled band of ex Civil War renegades led by a crazed fanatic who has a plan to kidnap the Vice President of the United States. In this short period just about every kind of thing we look for in an Old West saga is worked into the story. On several occassions it looks like Longarm is massively outnumbered, even jailed, and with little to no hope of surviving.
The time period of this story is 1879 or 1880.VP William Wheeler is on a secret mission to straighten out some details with a diplomat from Mexico, over the Gadsden Purchase where the US had bought the southern part of Arizona from Mexico. The purchase took place over 25 years prior ,but now during President Rutherford Haye's term;but there were still problems. The band of rebels planned to kidnap the principles for ransom, but Longarm takes it upon himself to make sure this doesn't happen.
A great story from beginning to end.
