Book Description

2006
Original Portuguese Title: "Jį nąo gosto de chocolates". Įlamo Oliveira's extraordinary novel about an Azorean daily life on the North American continent, with all its dramas and glories. In a sumptuous dialectic, Įlamo Oliveira tells us the lives of a family who, like so many Azorean families, out of economic necessity one day exchanged the placidity of the Azores for the roiling of the melting pot. This is a narrative of emotions, culture shocks. And linguistic challenges that wind up toppling some taboos and provoking in each reader an amalgam of feelings and issues..." - Diniz Borges in his presentation at a colloquium on Portuguese-American Literature at Yale University.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Written, May 24, 2007
This review is from: I No Longer Like Chocolates (Pioneer Collection) (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book very much, although it bothered me somewhat that the author is a resident of the Azores and many of the problems that the Azorean immigrants have in this book are ascribed to the fact that they came to America. That being said, the story was very poignant and very well written. It is told from the point of view of an elderly Azorean immigrant who lives in a nursing home, who looks back and mulls over the fate of his family in the years since they had immigrated to the United States.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Excellent! Excellent!, April 25, 2006
This review is from: I No Longer Like Chocolates (Pioneer Collection) (Paperback)
I, myself being an Azorean/American, was probably able to relate to this book more than a non-Azorean. The way Californian/Azoreans pronounce certain words was hilarious -- but so true. The feelings of first leaving the old country and encountering new traditions and habits and the first return visit to the old country and the reaction of both the people who live in the Azores towards the new "Americans" and how the "Americans" reacted to the Azores after being gone for several years. It was written precisely true and with deep emotion and humor! Great work.
