I enjoyed this book very much, although it bothered me somewhat that the author is a resident of the Azores and many of the problems that the Azorean immigrants have in this book are ascribed to the fact that they came to America. That being said, the story was very poignant and very well written. It is told from the point of view of an elderly Azorean immigrant who lives in a nursing home, who looks back and mulls over the fate of his family in the years since they had immigrated to the United States.

I, myself being an Azorean/American, was probably able to relate to this book more than a non-Azorean. The way Californian/Azoreans pronounce certain words was hilarious -- but so true. The feelings of first leaving the old country and encountering new traditions and habits and the first return visit to the old country and the reaction of both the people who live in the Azores towards the new "Americans" and how the "Americans" reacted to the Azores after being gone for several years. It was written precisely true and with deep emotion and humor! Great work.
