2.0 out of 5 stars Unlikeable characters, June 21, 2006
By
This review is from: The Longest Pleasure (Paperback)
From the back cover:

Never say never...

It was her grandmother's death that drew Helen Michaels back to Castle Howarth and the man who had shattered her world ten years ago--the man she still despised.

Rafe Fleming followed in his father's footsteps and was now the overseer of the magnificent mansion. He was the only reason Helen's visits had been so infrequent. How she hated him--and hated herself for the way her heart raced when he turned his heated gaze on her or treated her with smug self-assurance.

Why had her grandmother willed Castle Howarth to him--with a clause that bordered on the absurd? The castle would belong to Helen, also--providing she and Rafe marry.

Of course, that was impossible.

And my review:

This book had historical depth and lots of tension. Problem was, both the hero and the heroine were so unlikeable that I found myself having a hard time caring about anything that happened to them. In fact, half the time when something bad happened to one (or both) of them, I'd by thinking that they deserved it! Not the kind of feelings a romance novel should inspire. Or if a romance novel inspires those feelings, they should be for the villans, not the heros.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a keeper!, May 3, 2000

Excellent book, strong storyline. Highly romantic.

Only two weak spots: the main character can tend to waffle (a la 'Scarlett' nonsense), and sometimes explanations are overlooked in the narrative ('when did they put down the glass?' type stuff), which can be interruptive. Much stronger writing in 3rd-party-observation mode, and that alone makes it an outstanding read.

(Have had this book for several years, even while "recycling" others at a local used-book store. Even while rummaging through my collection to decide what to 'recycle,' never have to re-read it to remember why I want to keep it.)
