This review is from: The Longest Voyage / Slow Lightning (Tor Double Science Fiction) (Paperback)
I was disappointed with Poul Anderson's Hugo Award Winning story "The Longest Voyage". I am surprised it won, it is not good. Pirates sailing around their planet for "Glory" and then inexplicably destroying their best chance of getting it because this same pirate captain believed the culture of his planet needed to go through the proper stages of development and he would hate to screw that up. Not convincing at all to me.

Steven Popkes short novel "Slow Lightning" however was a pleasant surprise. I worry that it may be forgotten as I have only found it in this double novel format with Anderson. It deserves to be read and remembered as it is a very well written tale of a future with extraterrestrials. The reverse chronology is a bit confusing at first as well as the patchwork nature of the different vignettes. A wonderful entertaining story.
