Book Description

September 1, 2008 4 and up

Twelve-year-old Lucas Vogel would rather be in school and safe at
home than work as a cowboy. He has no choice but to go along with his older brother, punching cows in the Big Muddy Badlands, and trying to find the cousin that turns out to be an outlaw!

Due to the tragic death of his parents, twelve-year-old Lucas Vogel finds himself on a cattle drive from Montana to Saskatchewan's Big Muddy badlands at the turn of the century. He's recently lost his Dutch immigrant parents in a devastating hurricane in Texas and has taken the train to Montana with his older brother Gil, a cowboy. Forced to leave their home, they need to make a living, and being cowboys will do that.

Learning to be a cowboy is more challenging, and rewarding, than Lucas could have imagined. He's lucky enough to get a wonderful horse to ride - Moon, an Appaloosa horse trained by the Nez Perce people, whose skills and instincts help him learn how to handle cattle. The other cowboys help him, and in time Lucas grows to understand the ways of cowboys; their strength, courage and illingness to help and support each other.

On the trip, Lucas has two interests. The first is to try and find the boys' cousin Henry, who they believe may be able to give Lucas a home so he can go back to school. The second is his fascination with "wanted" posters of notorious outlaws. He reads about the famous Pinkerton detectives and wonders if he himself might be able to spot and help capture an outlaw.

He succeeds beyond his dreams. He proves himself a competent and resourceful cowboy and helps recover his outfit's horses after they're stolen in the Big Muddy. They do find Cousin Henry and Lucas does help catch an outlaw, the fabled Dutch Henry. Only problem is that, yes, they're the same guy. By the end of the story, Lucas still loves books, but he's found out that there are many ways to learn about the world.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4–6—This novel gets off to a bumpy start and barely regains its balance as the story progresses. Orphaned in the Galveston hurricane of 1900, 12-year-old Lucas and his older brother, Gil, go from their Dutch enclave in Texas to Billings, MT, to seek work and find their cousin Henry, whom they've never met. Despite their lack of wrangling and horse-riding skills, they are hired on for a cattle drive from Montana to Canada. The book focuses on Lucas's quest to become a Pinkerton agent, the history of which is not explained until the afterword. The one-dimensional characters fall flat, Lucas as the wide-eyed boy who quickly befriends his trusty Nez Perce horse and Gil as the gruff and unemotional "true cowboy." Readers not familiar with Western jargon will find this book almost cryptic at times as characters "lope the punchers," "drive the beeves," and "trampous through the buttes." It is necessary to suspend disbelief as Lucas encounters real outlaws and Henry, while lost in the Badlands, rides bareback to safety. Overall, this is an unrealistic adventure in which the clunky dialogue and Western clichés get tired long before the journey is over.—Madeline J. Bryant, Los Angeles Public Library

5.0 out of 5 stars A great western fiction for young children about to move onto standard chapter books, January 16, 2009
This review is from: Longhorns and Outlaws (Paperback)
Fact and Fiction aren't that far apart. "Longhorns and Outlaws" is a story set in the later days of the old west. Lucas is a young dreamer who loves the stories of adventure of his time and has a wild imagination, a trait that makes his brother doubt whatever he says. When searching for his family, he finds outlaws . . . only to have his warnings unheeded. Lucas tries to help the law and protect his brothers at the same time, making "Longhorns and Outlaws" a great western fiction for young children about to move onto standard chapter books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Longhorns and Outlaws, October 7, 2008
This review is from: Longhorns and Outlaws (Paperback)
Longhorns and Outlaws is a fascinating historical novel for young people. This is a gripping tale about the life of two orphaned brothers on a cattle drive in 1901, who cross paths with real-life outlaws, like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Readers are sure to enjoy the adventure that entwines historical fact with a skilfully told story about the old west. The author has obviously done a great deal of research and has personal knowledge that makes the book authentic and exciting. She has also provided a glossary of cowboy terminology and a list of resources, making it a valuable resource for kids and teachers. For anyone interested in the early days about the wild buttes of Montana and Canada's Big Muddy, this is a must read.Longhorns and Outlaws
