5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Dictionary for learning American English!
I bought this dictionary in 2002. I had to choose an English-English dictionary among English dictionaries: Longman, Oxford, Cambridge, Macmillan, Collins Cobuild... etc. I chose a dictionary, Longman Advanced Dictionary(CD-ROM included, Paperback). As I opened the dictionary, I was surprised! The layout was clear and systematic! And Usage Notes are most useful for me...

1.0 out of 5 stars Good Dictionary, but bad CD.
I used to be a big fan of LAAD and bought two LAAD with CD. I have mostly used LAAD on the computer. I lost one CD. Now the other CD has a mysterious crack on it, which does not allow me to do the monthly authentication. I am sick and tired that LAAD needs an authentication every month, not even every six months or a year. I am now buying both the Merriam-Webster's...

And Usage Notes are most useful for me! And meanings of words are so easy to understand because Longman editors tried to explain meanings within 2000 common words. Although it is edited for ESL learners, but it might be good for upper-intermediate or higher-level EFL learners.
The dictionary faithfully reflects American English(spelling, pronunciation, spoken phrase) than other dictionaries. CD-ROM pronunces words nearly typical American English.
...) and this dictionary is for advanced learners, this dictionary is not difficult for me to understand meanings of words. Perhaps, Longman dictionaries explain meanings of word more easily.
I highly recommend it...
Anyway, Longman dictionaries are the best for me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great dictionary!, January 15, 2004

This is one of the best dictionaries I've ever had. The explanations are easy to understand, and the usage notes are very helpful. I especially like the phrases and example sentences. In some dictionaries, examples of usage are just few words. So it's often difficult to learn how to use those words. But with full sentences as examples, using the new words you just learnt is made much easier.

However I don't think it's necessary to include TOEFL and TOEIC exam information in this dictionary. There are lots of tests out there, why just these 2? Well this is a useful book for TOEFL, but people who are not taking TOEFL should not pay the extra.

If you are taking GRE, buy Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary or the smaller Merriam-Webster dictionary. Some GRE vocabulary tests come exactly from those words used in their explanations. But if GRE is not the target, I think this dictionary is more useful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Do you want to learn advanced english?, August 1, 2001

(REAL NAME)
This dictionary makes my english progress faster everyday. this one is advanced and supplemented version of Longman Dictionary of American English. I have found some words are missing at the Longman Dictionary of American English. But not this one. All definitions are written using only 2,000 easy words, and the meaning is easy to understand. Its layout is clear and comfortable to look for words and meanings. There are a lot of pictures and photos helping to visualize definitions. It is helpful for studying english because there are signs for the most popular words in spoken and written american english . If you want to learn higher level english, this dictionary is the one. However, this one is not perfect. The filp side is to be heavy that sometimes you don't want to carry with you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy it with CD, October 24, 2003
I love this dictionary. It's a masterpiece. Highly recommend it.
However, having to insert your CD in the drive once a month is UTTERLY RIDICULOUS.
Very, very helpful dictionary though. Go out and buy it.Forget the CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best vocab/phrases/idioms builder out there!, August 8, 2006
By
This dictionary is best for vacabulary/phrases/idioms building - it contains pretty much all the words/phrases/idioms u'll need to excel in English ( with more than 60,000+ sample sentences showing you typically how to use those words in sentences ) - basically it's even possible to try to memorize them all.

Again, if you're simply looking for a reference dictionary, get Merriam-Webster's or others'; If you're not a native speaker ( or say you have no idea what "shake a leg" means for instance.. and you wanna speak like an American ), this is definitely the BEST dictionary to get!

of course, the ultimate means to increase your vocab and other English skills (in general) is through extensive reading, but if English is your second language, Longman Advanced American Dictionary is, without doubt, the BEST one to get started...

Now the other CD has a mysterious crack on it, which does not allow me to do the monthly authentication. I am sick and tired that LAAD needs an authentication every month, not even every six months or a year. I am now buying both the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate 11th Edition (with CD) and the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language 4th edition (with CD) with almost the same amount of money for just one LAAD. And I am deleting LAAD from my computer, which does not work anyway without the pesky authentication.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Trustworthy Seller, July 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
They sent me a book with no CD. Moreover, I send them back their book in hope they will refund my $1.52 extra mailing cost out of my pocket but they never did. This the first BAD SELLER in Amazon ever encountered in my over two years shopping experience. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS SELLER!
