This dictionary is more or less a smaller version of the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (0582506646), and it comes with a CD-ROM. It has about 52,000 words and phrases that are beautifully defined using only the 2000 most common English words; it is simply EXCELLENT. But because this dictionary is about the same price as the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, I recommend that you buy that one instead because it is more comprehensive (it has more words & phrases).

Note: The Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English comes in two versions, one with a CD-ROM (0582776465) and one without the CD-ROM (0582506646), but I read that the CD-ROM is not worth getting.

The outside cover is inviting. The entry word is bold and easy to read. The language used in the definitions is easily understood by middle school students. The sample sentences adds to their understanding of word meaning. The addition of the section, "Study Notes" makes Longman more than 'just a dictionary'.

If you want a dictionary to help ESL or LEP students, choose this! It's clear and practical and the CD has a zillion exercises to help practice English and pronounces every word. The only drawback: the dictionary contains too few technical math and science words; many people struggle to comprehend this type of vocabulary.

This dictionary is very easy to read, especially for people whom English is a 2nd language, like myself. It uses very simple words to describe the new words.

The Thesaurus is right under the word, you can read it with the word without checking another section in the dictionary. It's very convenient and usable.

And the program on the CD is so easy to use. It does require you to put the CD in a CD-drive and will check for it. But what's the problem? There are many other much more expensive audio editing programs that's doing similar things.

The dictionary contains only 50K words. A little less compared to other dictionary. But this also makes it small and light enough to be portable.

I wish I knew and had bought this dictionary when I first came to the States some twenty years ago.

Highly recommended, especially for people whom English is their 2nd language.

There is an issue with the dictionary. The dictionary does not have enough words for my daily use. Sometime even my third-grader cannot find the words she looked for from her text book. This caused major inconvenience and I'm switching to Oxford.

I recommend this dictionary to new immigrants in their ESL study. Their definition to words are clear and easy to catch. Besides that,workbook and pictures are much help.
However, attached CD support by Apple itune software,it does not work alone unless you pay extra money.

I bought this dictionary because I am a special education teacher and heard that this dictionary is good for ELL students as well as special education students. It is a very interesting new way of defining words. It uses simple informative language and doesn't send the searcher all over its pages to get the actual definition. Its pronunciation key is VERY different from other dictionaries and is a bit too complicated because it differentiates the sounds of diphthongs very specifically. But overall I like it.

it's really good dictionary. it helps a lot with the english vocablury and meanings. i like it so mcuh and it helped me a lot.

This is a great Dictionary I love it.The best price ever. It comes with CD and it is a mazing after I install it on my computer I don't have to look up the words again I just type it and it comes the meaning on the screen immediately. THANK YOU.

This is very helpful for learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) as well as English as a second language ESL. It comes with an interactive CD that is most useful.
