5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for this book! Period.
This dictionary is better than any other American dictionary, CD does have problems but it'd be unfair not to reward it 5 stars for the content of the book. The only difference between this one and first edition is that this one comes with a CD - a bonus to me. (The picture of its first edition on Amazon.com shows the book with a CD, that picture i think belongs to this...

This dictionary is better than any other American dictionary, CD does have problems but it'd be unfair not to reward it 5 stars for the content of the book. The only difference between this one and first edition is that this one comes with a CD - a bonus to me. (The picture of its first edition on Amazon.com shows the book with a CD, that picture i think belongs to this one as the title suggest). Book uses 2000 most common words of english to define meanings. The book is 5 star for sure, but the CD is irritating. The CD has to be in the drive all the times in order to run the rather cheaply programmed software. It takes ages to load to look up a single word no matter what super computer you've got while the noise from your computer will make you want to fasten your seat belt.
So the bottom line is..Buy the book. If you get the first edition for real lesser price then you should prefer the first one, otherwise go for this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best American English Dictionary for Foreign Students, June 22, 2008

If you are learning English, you need this dictionary. It's full of clear examples, and you will find almost every word used in a sentence that gives context to the meaning. The CD is helpful, but like other reviews point out, is not very practical since you need to keep it on your computer all the time. For pronunciation I would recommend to buy the dictionary Merriam-Webster on CD which is very inexpensive, or go to the Merriam-Webster website, although the pop ads are quite annoying. Thing is that you need to listen to the correct pronunciation. Maybe the new Longman Dictionary has solved all the issues about this CD. I don't know, but I think is still too expensive. If you can afford it, I would absolutely recommend it. And even if you have access to internet all the time, do not think you can skip buying a dictionary; you will need it on your night stand next to your bed, or on your coffee table for quick consultation. No matter how advanced you are, this dictionary will stay with you for the rest of your life. I really love it. Two more suggestions: Audio books, books on tape, and listening, and more listening. For advance students: you need to check out the visual thesaurus. And don't worry about other books like "American Idioms" or "Slang", this dictionary covers idioms, slang, everything.
