not your ordinary tales July 28, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
This really is an extraordinary collection of stories - unusual, to say the least, and the writing is far beyond the ordinary. In the title story, a man trying to negotiate a deal with the devil believes he's summoned up the devil's own dog. In Mr. Farrel, two tiny mice come to the rescue of a terrorized little girl. There are zombies and wolves and Wicca and dueling sorceresses, an extraterrestrial dog, crocodiles and vampires, and a gay neutered Persian cat who takes on some little green men. So, mostly animal tales, but not your run of the mill animal tales.

The reader will find some chills and thrills and some mystery, at least in the sense of the mysterious, and even romance (if you can think of a gay Persian in romantic terms) but what strikes me as the most salient element in all these stories is a razor sharp and often wry wit.

If all this sounds a little outré to you, be assured that the author makes it all not only believable but quite accessible--I suspect there's a little witchcraft at work there, frankly. My advice is, get the e-book for yourself, especially if you like animals. Just don't expect to read Dick and Jane and Spot. These are not those kinds of creatures.

Lonnie, Me and the Hound from Hell had a title I couldn't go past.

I expected some funny amusing short stories. This collection far surpassed my expectation. Marian Allen's writing is incredibly witty, you'll chuckle all the way through. But what will really hit you with these stories is Allen's ability to get right inside a character (and in one case, quite literally). The points of view are refreshing and feel genuine, whether it is a male, female, child protagonist or a dog, cat or metaphorical message... I'd struggle to pick a favourite. I LOVE Lonnie in the lead story, but also couldn't get enough of the woofer in 'Dog Star'.

The most impressive thing about these stories is the way Allen skillfully weaves her sentences and words. Very cleverly written with active voices and rich descriptions. Not a dull moment or cliched simile in there. If you are a fan of dogs, demons, magic, postmodern intertextuality or just a bloody good story. Try it. I promise you won't be disappointed. Now I'm off to check out another one of Allen's books, I'm hooked!

Lonnie, Me and the Hound of Hell by Marian Allen is a fun and interesting series of short stories. Some are set in the present day, some in some other world. All have great characters and compelling plots. Many of the protagonists have interesting points of view. I bought it to read on my iPhone saving each story for when I needed something interesting to read. It was difficult not to rush through each story in one sitting. If I did that though, I'd be without reading material. I recommend this great read. Check out her novel, Eel's Reverence.

More About the Author

For as long as I can remember, I've loved telling and being told stories. When, at the age of about six, I was informed that somebody got paid for writing all those books and movies and television shows, I abandoned my previous ambition (beachcomber), and became a writer.

I've had stories in anthologies, on-line and print publications, including Oceans of the Mind and Marion Zimmer Bradley's Sword and Sorceress anthologies 22 and 23, on coffee cans and the wall of an Indian restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky.

Small town life agrees with me. I like the interconnectedness of everything and everybody. The internet is a little like a small town: I frequently "run into" an old friend in a new venue. I like connecting and reconnecting with people, meeting new friends and keeping in touch with the friends I already have.

My writing reflects this love of network. I try to remember, in my books and stories, that no one exists in total isolation, but in a web of connections to family, friends, colleagues, self at former stages of maturity, perceptions and self-images. Most of my work is fantasy, science fiction and/or mystery, though I write horror, humor, romance, mainstream or anything else that suits the story and character.
