Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

2005 was quite a year for news - Katrina, a new pope, gas prices, Iran, the reconstruction of Iraq, and even Cindy Sheehan.

You could get the spin on the year in review from the liberal media (hint: it involves blaming Bush for everything!) or, you can take A Look at 2005 from the Right Side with Paul Nowak, an editorial cartoonist whose work has appeared on CNSNews.com, Rightoons.com, and other news outlets courageous enough to show his work.

Paul's first-ever collection of political cartoons showcases 120 of his best work from 2005, covering the best and worst of the tumultuous year with just the right spin.

From the Author

Why a look at 2005 in cartoon form? Why not? The year was full of great and terrible things, but cartoons still have that ability to capture the spirit of an event in a way that other media cannot. Photos capture a moment; the printed word captures the thought; but in a cartoon, I can take the image and the thought and put them in a vise, coat them with industrial adhesive, give the guys big noses and dopey expressions, and produce a (hopefully) funny and ungodly mess. And since 2005 was a remarkable mess, it was an unending source of inspiration for cartoons.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Gift for a Conservative or a Thinking Liberal, February 8, 2006

I'm the artist who drew the cartoons. 2005 was a great year for the special kind of ridicule and abuse that cartoons can provide, from skewering the inestimable Cindy Sheehan (a walking cartoon in her own right) to the war on terror, to GM's amazing breakdown as an American icon.
The vast majority of cartoonists I know are inarguably more talented, more famous, better paid than I am, and almost invariably liberal. My view has always been that ideas should challenge the individual, not merely prop up preconceived notions. Since the editorial cartoons (and some of the more egregious strips, with the exception of "Prickly City") in most newspapers are overwhelmingly liberal, they do little more than present the Left side of the argument. This is fine, but it's not a good way to challenge people to think in other ways. So I brought out the book, with the hope that someone with a good heart might send this to a liberally-inclined friend and give them a new set of ideas to consider. The marketplace of ideas should be big enough for more than just the New York-Washington DC-Los Angeles triad of conventional, liberal thinking. Disagree with me on the cartoons? Terrific--the open-minded should always be willing to consider all of the alternatives. Now buy the stupid book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Look at a Momentous Year!, February 7, 2006
This review is from: A Look at 2005 from the Right Side (Paperback)
Paul has the talent to present convincing arguments or biting criticism in a single panel cartoon, and thus his record of 2005 is an important memorial that no conservative should be without.

It is also worth mentioning that despite the fact that this book contains the best of Paul's cartoons for 2005, there are those that have a broader timeframe.

(And if you happen to notice my name is the same as the illustrator of this book, we are not the smae person nor are we relatives. It is an uncanny coincidence - nothing more.)
