Editorial Reviews

After 6 critically acclaimed recordings with Pearl Django and Hot Club Sandwich, guitarist and composer, Greg Ruby pushes the boundaries of hot jazz string music with the release of Look Both Ways. In 2009, Ruby received artist support grants to compose and record new compositions inspired by Gypsy jazz guitar legend, Django Reinhardt. The Greg Ruby Quartet was formed to record and perform those compositions and to pay homage to the musical genius of Django on the auspicious event of the 100th anniversary of his birth. Featuring 12 original compositions, Look Both Ways brings together a who's who list of American string musicians dedicated to the legacy of Django Reinhardt including: Frank Vignola (Les Paul Trio, David Grisman Quintet), Evan Price (Hot Club of San Francisco, Turtle Island String Quartet) and Doug Martin (John Jorgenson Quintet).

One way to celebrate Django Rehinhardt's 100th anniversary is to put out an album. Guitarist Ruby goes a bit further and not only gives us a fine outing of Gypsy jazz, but composed all the pieces himself. With help from Evan Price (violin), Doug Martin (rhythm guitar), Spencer Haveskeland (bass), and guests David Lange and Frank Vignola, Ruby puts us in the spirit of Reinhardt without just recycling the old tunes. He then adds touches of his own that present a unique look at the style. Refreshing in approach, with masterful playing, the quartet distinguishes itself on this excellent release.

I heard a track from this CD on a local radio station and was immediately hooked. I think there is only one track that I'm not enthused about. The rest are great. It's a Django Reinhardt sound, but not an imitation. This is original stuff.

I read an article in my local paper describing an upcoming concert by this band. Not being able to see the show in person I bought the album. It is good.
