Book Description

October 9, 2009
In Look Both Ways, respected branding consultant and design community leader Debbie Millman has constructed a series of essays that examine the close relationship between design and everyday life. You'll find inspiration on every page as you meander through illuminating observations that are both personal and universal. Each beautifully illustrated essay reveals the magic - and wonder - of the often unseen world around us.

Excerpt from "Look Both Ways"
It occurred to me, as I stood there, that I could simultaneously, vividly look both ways - backward and forward, in time - at once. I remembered longing to know what was coming, who I would become and how. And I suddenly saw it all over again in front of me. The light was exactly the same, and as the sun fell and the summer shadows slivered against the elegant, lean, concrete towers in the distance, I recognized the smell of the warm air, the precise pink and grey of the coming dusk and the mysterious melancholy and joy of both knowing and not-knowing, and the continuity that occurs when both collide.—Debbie Millman

Editorial Reviews

Review

The thought-provoking personal essays she wrote in Look Both Ways will convince you--through desire, envy, optimism, embarrassment, and love, why design is the answer to the question of what it is that makes people buy. --SACRAMENTO BOOK REVIEW

The essays are presented in various methods of typographic expression, with twists and turns which illuminate and magnify the words into something more than a mere piece of prose. It's a beautiful little gem of a book. --PAGING A LIFE IN BOOKS

"Typographic poetry" --COOL HUNTING

Look Both Ways is a treat...Millman turns out a collection of musings presented in a range of type treatments, fonts and stylings....it's a charming retell of a well-explored life. --GOTHAM MAGAZINE

"One of the Best Design Books of 2009" --FAST COMPANY

This book is a delightful stroll through a great mind for design. It's a walk through musings, reflections and personal experience about a life lived with design at the center. LOVED IT and it will occupy a permanent home in my design library. A great book for anyone who wants to see what passion for a domain looks like.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful read, October 12, 2010
This review is from: Look Both Ways: Illustrated Essays on the Intersection of Life and Design (Hardcover)
There are so many different ways to enjoy this book, I don't even know where to begin....the stories are whimsical, meaningful, nostalgic, enjoyable, at times heart-wrenching and at other times pure joy....all the qualities I long for in a good read. But on top of that, this book is gorgeous to look at! I love the variety of visual styles in the essays, personally preferring the swirly colorful ones but have a deep appreciation for the intricacies of all the typography styles. And the cross stitch essay...incredible! It all feels like a secret peek which is a rare treat in the world of dragon tattoos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable, October 21, 2010
This review is from: Look Both Ways: Illustrated Essays on the Intersection of Life and Design (Hardcover)
I must admit I was a bit skeptical about this book. Looking through it at first I wondered why each of the chapters were in a different style. But as I read it, I began to understand what Millman was trying to do and fell under the spell of her writing and the hand drawn type. I only wish the whole book were designed by hand--the typographic pieces are not as strong as the hand-crafted ones. But overall, I loved the stories, and I loved the personal insight and advice provided.
