Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-An easy-reader with a twist: while building vocabulary and reinforcing the months of the year, it also promotes a holiday craft. Each double-page illustration features a month and a one-sentence banner suggesting a greeting card for it, from "In January, I'll make you a card to ring in the new year" to "In December, I'll make you a card with candles and snowflakes, too!" Themes are not overtly religious (the visuals for March include a green shamrock and leprechaun, but no mention of Saint Patrick). Occasions such as Valentine's Day, Fourth of July, Halloween, and Thanksgiving are included, though they are not mentioned by name and actual dates are not marked on each monthly calendar. The book is oddly illustrated with flat, childlike drawings of large-headed youngsters depicted in profile, each with a wide wedge of a smile and a single wide eye. These pictures distract from the other graphic elements successfully employed here, like crayon-colored backdrops, leaf rubbings, scratch art, and paper/fabric collage.
