Editorial Reviews

Review

“A chatty, fun and often useful guidebook of beauty tips, fashion advice and DIY projects for women of a certain age….Warm, spirited, and ultimately sincere.” (Shelf Awareness )

“Style, beauty and just-let-it-go tips for the 40-plus set, hilariously delivered by the author of The Three-Martini Playdate.” (People )

“Funny, compassionate . . . [advocates] a little relaxation and rationality . . . somewhere between ‘sitting on the sofa all day and spending five hours a day at the gym.’” (Los Angeles Times Book Review )

“Although You Look Fine, Really is loaded with useful tidbits, what I love best is the way Mellor urges women…to be grateful for their lives. Her point: Appreciate what your…life holds instead of focusing on what you lack. That gratitude will free you to embrace midlife, wrinkles and all.” (Chicago Tribune )

From the Back Cover

The bestselling author of The Three-Martini Playdate delivers a witty, get real guide to embracing and enjoying the adventure of midlife, complete with grooming shortcuts, tips on being your own personal trainer, perfect party recipes, and advice on how to add a sense of play and celebration to every day

The world, apparently, thinks women need a makeover. If their teeth are less than white from the love of a strong cup of tea, they must be bleached to a blinding brightness. Waists should be whittled, nether regions made smooth and hairless or adorned with hearts or landing strips. Thighs must be sculpted, noses straightened, arms toned. Our homes must be spotless, well-designed showplaces, our dress size zero. Now that forty is the new thirty, there’s no excuse to be anything less than stunning -- right?

Not quite, says Christie Mellor. Filled with real style and beauty tips, and more information about lipstick than a woman has a right to know, You Look Fine, Really helps any female over the big 4-0 become her truly fabulous self, without injecting toxins into her forehead. In short, kicky sections like "Foundation: Your Own Personal Vinyl Siding," "Your Midlife Fashion Crisis: Now What?" and "Survival Skills for the Mature Woman," Mellor inspires women to reclaim their personal style and uncover their inner fun goddess.

More About the Author

While pursuing a happy life that includes an interesting husband, two almost-always pleasant children, and a neurotic duck, Christie became a vociferous cheerleader for the "other kind of parenthood," the anti-perfection, you-deserve-a-life kind. Her first book, "The Three-Martini Playdate," was a harbinger of a new trend for today's beleaguered parents, helping them to withstand the unceasing and overbearing good advice and pressure to raise perfect, highly enriched offspring,. She continued the thread with "The Three-Martini Family Vacation." Christie also likes to draw, and does so repeatedly throughout the pages of "Raised by Wolves: Clues to the Mysteries of Adulthood," out in paperback in the spring of 2010, a book designed for the adult child whose parents did NOT read "The Three Martini Playdate." Christie's rants have been published in Britain in The Guardian, Junior Magazine, and the Sunday Express, and in Australia's Sunday Life Magazine, and she's been heard on Britain's BBC radio and American Public Radio's Marketplace, in addition to being reviewed and interviewed in Newsweek, Playboy, The New York Times, People, and other publications.
"You Look Fine, Really" is due from HarperCollins in the spring of 2010. It's for the ladies. The gals. The women. Specifically women over the age of 40. And yet, it's totally girly! Christie is very excited about this one.

If you are over forty, or contemplating becoming over forty, then Christie Mellor is your new best friend. She's the gal pal who gives you a boost, without adding a snow job. She's the good mirror you want to look into, the one that makes you look realistically svelte and put together. (She is NOT a magnifying mirror or a funhouse mirror, though her book is tons of fun to read and brings important self-esteem values into focus.) Her advice is sane, practical, do-able, highly amusing and within your budget. But the most important advice is to simply relax, smile and enjoy your bad, beautiful, elegantly aging self. After all, you'll never look better than you do today!

I love this book! The author (Christie Mellor) must have known that I needed a boost being of the middle aged persuasion. It's funny, insightful, intelligent, cool, well written and I'm going to actually USE some of her ideas. I can't wait to mix up a martini from her recipe as well as create the perfect hue of red lipstick. I can't wait until she writes the next one. She should be on Oprah! I would love to see her talk about her ideas.

My wife wanted to read this book, but after wading through it she pronounced it boring, trite, and written for little old ladies in their nineties.
