Great upper body workouts,
By Sylvia Lopez (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Look Great Sleeveless: The Ultimate Workout Guide to Awesome Arms, Beautiful Bust, and Sultry Shoulders (Paperback)
I have read all of Brad Schoenfeld's books and think he is one of the best fitness authors around. He explains things in a very understandable fashion and his approach is very cutting edge. This book is particularly good. It has specific workouts for the upper body muscles. Those who own his book, "Look Great Naked" will be familiar with a good deal of the material as he uses the same basic principles to create the routines (combining 3 different exercises that work different parts of the muscle). The exercises are very unique. I've been training for a long time and never even heard of some of them. He gives lots of alternatives for variety which is good because it stops you from getting bored. I will be using these workouts as part of my routine for many years to come.

I love this book! It is very well written and extremely easy to follow. I was on weight watchers and going to the gym when I hit a huge plateau, that last 20 lbs just wasn't budging. When I say gym, I mean religiously, 3-4 day's a week for at leat 2 hours sometimes more. On weight Watchers I was eating excactly what I was supposed to. So I tried this. Not only did he explain why I wasn't getting results at the gym, but he also explained why I wasn't getting results with the diet part. I kept to my points but tweaked my food intake around and did the workout as per the book and... viola! The weight came off and I have definition! Yippee! I also bought the other book "Look Great Naked". Again, the workouts were great, but the nutrition information was exactly the same (I beleive he states that somewhere) I wish he would have put both books together... oh well. Good luck to all of you trying this!

After reading "Look Great Naked" I wasn't sure how this book would be, but since I was looking for something specifically targeting the upper body I decided to give it a try. This book is a useful source of advice for upper body training. Schoenfeld provides a nice array of exercises for the shoulders, chest, biceps and triceps, though I would have appreciated more guidelines on starting weight ranges for the exercises. There are pictures to help guide you and ensure you are doing the exercises properly. His nutritional advice is somewhat better in this book than in his others, and while some of the recipes are duplicates from his other books, there are a few new additions that are more palatable. He outlines a carb depletion/carb loading plan to follow if you have a "big event" coming up and want to look your best (though I'm not sure how good of an idea the plan really is, health-wise). As with many fitness books, this one has a number of useful tips that I have made use of, and a lot of filler that I could have done without. If you've already read "Look Great Naked", a lot of his advice will be redundant as he's obviously just copied some of the general chapters from that book. Overall, the exercises are good and get the job done.

I was not aware that you need to be a member of a gym in order to make the most of this workout. I wish I had know that before I bought the book. How to look great sleeveless- go to a gym, hire a trainner and return this book.

I found this book at a library book sale, and figured for a buck, whats the worst thing that could happen? There isn't much different between the male and female upper body musculature, so I'm giving the routines a try. While a lot of information is basic, it goes into details that I find missing from most exercise books, and that is where its real charm is.It breaks the upperbody into 4 basic areas, shoulders, chest, biceps and triceps, then goes one step deeper and analysis the muscles that make up these groups, finally giving exercises that target each one.Usually a dumbbell, barbell, cable and calestentic version. The workouts are a mix and match of these exercise that give a lot of variety in routines. The models are pretty hot too! Seriously...an exercise book that actually uses anatomy to build its routines...awesome! I can't understand why this is so rare in fitness literature. I'm using this technique to develop my own core workout when I'm done with this one. Okay, you still have to go to the gym to get the free weights, but now you know what muscles you need to work, it should be a problem to find alternatives on line. It will still take time and commitment as well, but gosh darn it, that is what makes looking like you work out so darn cool, cause its something you earn!

I like the pictures of how the exercises are done but it does assume access to a lot of equipment! All in all I am glad to have it in my collection.
