5.0 out of 5 stars Jazz (and Blues) Played in a style to make you smile, October 31, 2001
By
This review is from: Look Out - Phineas Is Back (Audio CD)
This is my first Phineas Newborn CD -- but it sure won't be my last. His mastery of the piano is breath-taking. Very few jazz pianists can match his technique, virtuosity, and depth. Listening to this CD is an experience not to be missed. It is a joy to hear, and it will make you smile. I garontee it!

Phineas Newborn Jr.(1931-1989)

This trio session recorded in 1976 by Pablo Records was to be his last recorded trio date.Phineas during his prime in the 50's and early 60's was well-known for his remarkable technical prowess, and was often compared to Oscar Peterson in his pianistic approach.During mid-60's and early 70's Newborn vanished due to health problems and other unknown reasons.Phineas displays with renewed vigor, his technical mastery, and brilliant melodic and harmonic inventiveness on this session.Newborn is backed up by the great Ray Brown on bass, and the hard-swinging Jimmie Smith on drums. This trio really smokes and is a lasting testimonial to one of the great legends of jazz. This comes highly recommended.
