I recently switched jobs, and I needed to learn ESSBASE. Although the HELP menus for ESSBASE were good, I needed more details. I am a programmer, and could have picked it up on my own, but I needed to learn ESSBASE quickly and thoroughly. This book makes it simple and easy to understand. I am not an Excel guru, but I do have a background in databases. None of that mattered as this book will teach you at the beginner level. Great book and it makes a nice quick reference book. It gets a '5 star rating' from me.

As the book itself states everybody involved or soon to be with Essbase should get one. First part goes from zero explaning multidimensional foundations and taking an in depth Excel Add-In review. It is well explained, sequenced with a great and tampered good humour style as well as it is rich and fundamental. The second part goes covering SmartView and the final part is a gem in the Essbase world covering everything you ever wanted to know about in the role of a Essbase Administration. Top book for a great software and a very challenging and interesting career path.

Gives good overview of Essbase. Unfortunately, the authors pepper the prose with wisecracks and silly humor that detracts from and distracts the discourse. It baffles me why they feel the need to do that. Without the humor, it would be a much better book.

In their book on Hyperion Planning, the humor is even more overboard--and made that book a most difficult read--reader has to try hard to ignore the humor and stay on point. It was really silly.

This is a wisecracking intro to Hyperion OLAP system -- how to get data out of it, the theoretical concepts, and the various data query and reporting tools. Hyperion is a huge subject, and the book is inevitably a mile wide and a foot deep, but it is a starting point for playing with the system before further training or before checking out the Hyperion documentation. I don't know how much I will need the book after the first 6 months of using Hyperion, but it is worth the price for those few months. The book shares maybe 10-20% with the administrator's guide "Look Smarter Than You Are with Essbase 11: An Administrator's Guide" which is focused on under-the-hood setup and admin. My only complaints are the sketchy index and the binding which doesn't allow the book to lie flat.
