Editorial Reviews

James Iha began his career as a co-founder of The Smashing Pumpkins in Chicago in 1987. He recorded and toured with the group until 2000, during which time they released ten albums and became one of the biggest bands of the era, selling millions of albums and filling arenas worldwide. In addition to his guitar playing and singing, James was also a contributing songwriter. In 2003, he joined the acclaimed progressive rock band, A Perfect Circle, featuring members of Tool and Marilyn Manson. Look To The Sky is James' first solo album in nearly 15 years, following 1998's Let It Come Down. The album features guests such as Karen O and Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara, Nathan Larson of Shudder To Think, and Tom Verlaine.

Whenever I take the time to write-up a review here on amazon I usually like to keep it a bit on the lenghthy side and give a little analysis. I think I can sum this one up pretty quick though. It's pretty good! It's better than Iha's first solo record from the late 90s (which I also enjoy). One can't help to make comparisons between this and the new Smashing Pumpkins record, both are good but I would say this is better. Plus it has just as many original Smashing Pumpkins members as the so-called Smashing Pumpkins have now.

It's good! Get it!

James Iha's voice is the same. Quiet, mellow, yet emotive. He continues his mostly mellow style, but incorporates some synthesizer and other effects in a number of songs. The songs are mostly strong, the best songs (in my opinion) are either overtly catchy or a little more subtly complex. I've found that I enjoy it best when I play it on shuffle along with the first album. They play together very well. If you liked the first album, you should like this one as well.

If you like the "REAL" pre-break-up Smashing Pumpkins you will like this cd. Reminds me of what they sounded like back when the band was more than just Billy and Jimmy wanting to be famous. This CD is really really good folks. Never knew how much James put into the Smashing Pumpkins until I picked up this cd. Rock on James!

For pumpkin fans, if you liked the more single b-side vibes, particularly with the above singles in Aeroplane Flies High, you'll dig this album.

I like James Iha alot. Yep, alot.

'Let it Come Down', his other album is one of the classic vinyls from the 90s to me; it's a real anomaly and wasn't really 'got' in what type of album it was to fans when released due to giant SP shadow, yet at same time wouldn't have come about the way it did if not for that. This 2nd album got some laughably bad reviews when released, but overtime will have it's own fan base also i'd guess.

I'm very happy with this album. Nothing could match his first album but this is great, glad it wasn't rushed. Iha's lyrical approach gets bashed but that is actually part of a greater approach with the music and any criticism hasn't got that. It is part of the reason why Iha's music won't date the way 'classic' pumpkins may be for example.

There is alot of interesting production without it being over-bearing in the sound. I like to listen to the album with very high treb frequency & mid high base frqs, seems to give the type of range that suits the music package the best to me. 'Appetite' is a bit of a clunker to the album flow but maybe that was the point & part from that, all remaining songs have enough about them to never outstay their welcome as uninspired, with Gemini, Dream Tonight, New Years Day, Till next Tuesday & Waves being early favorites.

I've always been a fan of the Smashing Pumpkins and considered James Iha to be essential to bringing out the full potential of the band's lyrical and musical talent. This solo album is very upbeat and enjoyable to listen to. His older solo album was good too, but this one is better. I really wish James Iha and Billy Corgan would collaborate on some music again as the combination would be phenomenal.
