Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4?In this continuing saga of the children from Polk Street School, the class is taking a trip to Washington, D.C. During the trip, Emily comes to realize that a generally unpopular classmate has some positive traits; in fact, he turns out to be a good friend. Along with the story, Giff offers a quick tour of the sites. She also includes a section of very brief descriptions of the students' favorite things to see, along with addresses and phone numbers. Even with the present closing of roads in the city and some errors, such as calling the Tomb of the Unknowns by its former name, this is a fun introduction for youngsters making their first trip to the nation's capital. Shirley Climo's City! Washington, D.C. (Macmillan, 1991) and Catherine Reef's Washington, D.C. (Dillon, 1990) are for older audiences and deal with history rather than just having a good time looking around. An easy-to-read chapter book for fans of the series, as well as for those planning a visit.?Margaret C. Howell, West Springfield Elementary School, VA

From Booklist

Gr. 2^-4. Ms. Rooney's class from the Polk Street School series returns for another adventure--an overnight field trip to Washington, D.C. Emily Arrow is excited about the excursion until homesickness, a yucky partner, and a forgotten notebook begin to dull her enthusiasm. With great effort she maintains a brave front and discovers comforting notes from her mother and many kindnesses from her partner. Giff's story intersperses travel commentary between traumas; the second half of the book is a children's guide to the D.C. area, which lists 42 favorite places to visit and includes descriptions (written as homework assignments from Ms. Rooney's students), addresses, and phone numbers for each. This will be popular with Polk Street fans and may be useful for young readers who want to help plan a family trip. Kay Weisman

Got this book for 8 year olds going to DC for first time. Read book first before giving. Really? Poorly written, very disjointed. The lesson about "me first" attitudes could work, but then they
go to the white house to visit the home of the FIRST family. Huh?

I bought this for my 8yr old before going to DC. He had a 6 hr plane ride so this helped fill the time and what he would see when he was there. He said he enjoyed the book and compared the places he went to with the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Intro, June 30, 2007
This review is from: Look Out, Washington D.C. (Polk Street Special) (Paperback)
I had my boys read this before going to Washington DC. It gave them insight on what to expect. I have also shared it with others who are taking their children or homeschooling.

I liked the story line and the tourist perspective. It is a great resource for teaching about different places. Wish there were more along this line.
