5.0 out of 5 stars It Looked Like Spilt Milk by Charles Shaw, March 21, 2006
By
This review is from: It Looked Like Spilt Milk (Hardcover)
I am a children's librarian, with many years' experience with preschool storytimes. This is a classic concept book, and one of my favorites. As a read-aloud, I like it better than Eric Carle's more recent Little Cloud. The repetition not only engages the children, it makes it easy for them to respond successfully. "It looked like ..." gives them a chance to identify the shape, with no wrong answers, because the next phrase is "But it wasn't a wasn't a ..." for all. By the time the last page revals that "It was just a cloud in the sky" most of them have guessed, and are pretty proud of themselves. It might be too long for many groups (he wrote it for a pre-television audience) but it is easy to skip pages or speed up. Makes a great feltboard using quilt batting.

5.0 out of 5 stars good for either ESL class or music class, April 17, 2003

Since the text follows a simple pattern, the book is good for teaching English as a foreign language. Here in Korea, I have had students ask me to read it again.

It is also good for a lesson on spoken intonation. The children enjoy playing the xylophone on C-E-A-G-G-G while I read "but it wasn't spilt milk."

5.0 out of 5 stars It looks simple, but children love it., January 19, 2000
By A Customer
My 2 year-old son first read this book at daycare. He loved it, and his teacher recommended I buy it for him. The drawings are simple, and the rhyme is repetetive, but it is a story that is very easy for children to join in on "reading." It also teaches toddlers new words like "squirrel" and "ice cream cone" that other books for this age group do not contain.

I am a pre-school teacher and have found this book lends itself to many other project such as allowing children to make their own book showing what they think the clouds look like. It is a very easy book for children to memorize and then "reread" over and over. My children love to "read" this book to anyone that will listen. I recomend this book to anyone that has a child with emerging reading skills or wonderful imaginations!!

5.0 out of 5 stars It Looked Like Spilt Milk, November 29, 2001

I'm a new elementary educator, and I found this book very useful for promoting creativity in the classroom. Not only is it a good book to read before introducing a unit on clouds and weather, but also it can be used to increase artistic expression. You will not be disappointed with this title.

What exactly is the "it" in this story? That's what the author leaves the reader to discover as you flip through the pages of this intriguing little book. White pictures and font set against sky blue pages set up this childhood guessing game. Sometimes it looked like spilt milk, but it wasn't spilt milk. Sometimes it looked like a birthday cake or a squirrel or a tree and so on and so forth. The book provides an excellent introduction for preschool/kindergarten lessons on clouds or as the pre-model activity for some other creative exercise. Personally, I just like flipping through the book looking at the white on the blue, it's so calming and peaceful. Anyway, a very useful book to use teaching young children that they will enjoy having read to them.

My autistic son is terrified of spilling milk. When I saw this title, we had to have it! Now when he spills, he tries to guess what the spills look like. Much better than a screaming meltdown! One strange thing- there are two places where the cloud "looks like spilled milk." Why twice? Very odd.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic for every collection, September 7, 2009

This Book encourages vocabulary and imagination. It's a reminder to sit on your back outside, look up into the sky and name the shapes you see. Use your imagination! You'll be surprised by the rich stories you can come up with. No clouds? Use white paint on blue paper or look for patterns, shapes and design in the wall and ceiling paint in your house.

Awesome book for children 2 to 6. It allows a child's imagination to soar. The next time you go outside and the puffy clouds are all about, you will truly appreciate having read this book to your child. Highly recommend
