5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Freedom....FINALLY on a CD!
This album was always one of Michael's best.....now its totally enhanced with the addition of his 1986 hit SWEET FREEDOM. Really good players on the album too like Joe Walsh make this a good second album from this talent.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing remaster
This review is for the 2010 release by Friday Music since enough has been said about Michael McDonald and "No Lookin' Back" itself (though at the time I post this, you'll have to look at the original CD release No Lookin Back).

This review is from: No Lookin' Back w/ Sweet Freedom (Original Recording Remastered) (Audio CD)
This review is for the 2010 release by Friday Music since enough has been said about Michael McDonald and "No Lookin' Back" itself (though at the time I post this, you'll have to look at the original CD release No Lookin Back).

Unfortunately Friday Music releases are hit and miss. You can get wonderful remastered classics with extras such as Jarreau (Bonus Track) (Original Recording Remastered) and Other Roads (Deluxe Edition), and then you can get travesties such as this one.

This release adds "Sweet Freedom", the single from the movie "Running Scared" (Running Scared). But instead of adding it at the end, It was inserted into the middle of the original running order AND several of the other tracks were moved around. This however is nothing compared to the track itself: At 0:44 seconds into the song, the highs on the right channel slowly fade away. By 1:00 they are almost entirely gone--so much so that McDonald's voice actually shifts from center stage towards the left channel. At 1:15 the highs start fading back in but don't entirely return until around 1:57. For a company in the business of remastering old "classics", and priding themselves on doing so, to release a track like this is beyond me. Was this the original master, and was it damaged like this? If that's the case, and even though it pains me to say this, they should have found a second generation copy and cleaned it up. It wouldn't have been perfect, but it would have been better than this mess.

Now, since Sweet Freedom is my least favorite McDonald song, and is probably one of my least favorite songs of the 80s, I'd probably never listen to the song again and was ready to overlook Friday's goof. And then the next track came on...

"Our Love" was a big single for McDonald and can still be heard on soft rock stations today, and (mostly) deservedly so. BUT what we do get IS the single version. The original CD release has a different version The original version has additional synthesizers in the first verse and McDonald "la la la-ing" at the end of the track. The single version (the one included on this release) omits the synthesizer, adds more percussion and guitar, cuts McDonald out altogether and the end, and fades the song out earlier. While I prefer the single version, why wasn't it simply added at the end of the disc??!! There's over 30 minutes of room! And yes, there are subtle differences in the two versions, but come on! We should have both! If this CD becomes the only in-print version, then the original "lp" version of Our Love will be lost forever.

The rest of the tracks on this CD have only marginal improvements over the original CD. That's not so much a knock against Friday Music--the recording techniques used from the 80s onward have been so good that most recordings from 1980 on don't need much remastering (but extra tracks are nice).

But Friday really dropped the ball on this one. The botched Sweet Freedom and the lack of both versions of Our Love mean I won't be keeping this CD. Some lucky, or rather unlucky, soul will be finding this CD in a used bin at my local brick and mortar CD store.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Freedom and a few others are knockouts!, October 7, 2014
This review is from: No Lookin' Back w/ Sweet Freedom (Original Recording Remastered) (Audio CD)
A lot of people have an attitude when it comes to Michael McDonald and it usually isn't a good one. But, I was always a fan. I bought this CD for one song.....Sweet Freedom. There are a couple other songs that are absolutely fantastic. The rest.....while they are not bad songs, they are nothing new. Kind of boring. His first solo CD was so good that I don't know if he can hit that high again.
