Wonderful Job!!,
By
This review is from: Lookin' For Luv (Paperback)
This book came recommended to me by two wonderful people that I know, one being the Diva of Romance herself, Rochelle Alers and second my friend of Montsho, Jackie Perkins. They both said you gotta read this book by Carl Weber. Guess what, I did and I really had fun reading this book. It was not a dull moment in this book, it sorta kept me grabbing the book even when I knew I needed to sleep. The book is full of so much DRAMA that I believe that is what kept it so interesting.I am the true romance reader but it was very refreshing having Mr. Weber illustrate in this book the lives of four African-American men from various backgrounds with different agendas. But they had one thing in common, they all end up calling this love line (1-900-Black Luv). The book revolves around what each one encounters from the selected mates from that love line. It's funny, it's some food for thought-type book, it is an easy read that it works like a magnet pulling you deep into the story. I strongly recommend this book, especially to my very special set of romance readers, they know who they are because they check on my reviews all the time. Now it does not have those high initimate scenes you're accustomed to but you should definetly enjoy the break because this book does provide just what Doctor BJ orders: LAUGHTER, FUN, EASY-READING AND RELAXATION!! One great thing about my reading this book and having my own personal copy is that Carl Weber will be here in my city this month and of course I can have it autographed. Looking forward to the next Carl Weber novel!!

Dial 1-900 For Luv!,
By
This review is from: Lookin' For Luv (Paperback)
Looking for a book to pick you up and make you laugh and one that presents AA males in a normal, realistic perspective...then look no further than Lookin' For Luv. This debut novel from Carl Weber is witty, entertaining, easy to read and filled with realistic characters and situations. Lookin' For Luv is the story of four AA men who work together and who are all looking for love via 1-900-BLACK LUV. The storyline is told from the AA male's perspective and combines comedy, drama, romance, dating during the '90s and contemporary issues to form a compelling and well crafted tale. Everyone who's ever been in the dating game can relate to at least one of the colorful characters in this book. These characters provide antics and situations which keep you LOL(laughing out loud), ROTF(rolling on the floor), hollering out loud and talking to the book..."no he/she didn't go there". My favorite character was Tyrone gosh was this brotha smooth with his 10 Rules to Satisfy a Woman; and my least favorite character who had absolutely no obvious redeeming qualities was Maurice. Yes I thoroughly enjoyed Lookin' For Luv and highly recommend it for a chance of pace...if you want to laugh a lot then pick up this book today...you won't be disappointed. Okay you might be disappointed with the epilogue...I didn't think it was fair to one of the characters and was oh so cold...and the cover could use some work. The couple portrayed(on the cover) makes it seem that Lookin' For Luv is only for a very young audience but the characters are relatable to anyone including those folks who are in their 20s or their 50s. BOTTOM LINE: I still really really really like Lookin' For Luv and am looking forward to future novels from newcomer Carl Weber.

Undeniable Fun,

This review is from: Lookin' For Luv (Paperback)
Don't start this book to close to bedtime. I guarantee that you will not get to sleep that night. Carl Weber writes a book that keeps you turning the pages. One would never imagine so much could happen by four men dialing 1-900-BLACK-LUV. I was hesitant when I first bought this book. I read it in one day and have been recommending it ever since. I have talked to friends, people at work and strangers at bookstores into buying it. All his charcters are interesting, fully developed, and their stories fulfilling. This book kept me laughing. I was constantly saying of Mr. Weber,'oh no he didn't or he is too much'. Like great movies have you talking to the screen, Lookin' For Luv has you talking and laughing out loud. If this book doesn't lift you and make you laugh, I would check to see if you still had a pulse. I will be one of the first ones to pick up Mr. Weber's next book.

Mo' Funny Tales from a True BrothaMan,
This review is from: Lookin' For Luv (Paperback)
A few weeks ago, I walked into my favorite cultural bookstore in downtown chicago, and when i walked in I met Carl Weber, who recommended that i pick up his book. It was totally refreshing to meet an author who was down to earth and friendly. I promised that i would pick up his book on Friday and when i did it was so good. I was on the train reading this wonderful book that was written by a brotha and it was so comical and true. It was refreshing to read about the 4 different brothas who had different agendas in using the 1-900-BLACK-LUV line. It was funny and real and i really look forward to reading more from Carl. He's a great writer! I look forward to reading more of his works! Keep writing and giving us mo' funny and realistic tales Carl. We love it.

watch your back eric jerome dickey !,
This review is from: Lookin' For Luv (Paperback)
beacuse this novel by carl weber will appeal to anyone who likes a good love story that isn't schmaltzy or contrived...i have nothing against a love story, just corny romance novels...to me, this story is realistic. weber doesnt have the vegomatic-create-a pop-culture-reference flair that eric jerome dickey has, but he makes up for it by creating vivid, honest characters...the four male characters could be anyone you know : kevin-the good guy, tyrone-the street smart brother, antoine-the intellectual, and maurice--the player. all of them i liked, even maurice. i kinda pitied maurice, because i knew that his lurid behavior was born out of a traumatic experience...weber also takes on some other subjects here, and handles them smoothly. kevin's relationship with alicia and the subject of single moms, kevin involvement with denise and the subject of interracial relationships. at first, i had percieved carl as being against them, but he was showing the reader how some people can get caught up in the obsession of another person. antoine came off as being as a bit of a snob, just because a woman doesn't read shakespeare or talk proper, that doesnt make her less of a person. and the fact that he was against interracial dating, when he immersed himself in white literature made him a hypocrite... the character shawna should've been left out of the book, it would've worked just fine without it. otherwise, a fun thoughtful read. eric is not the only brother who can write about black love. keep it up carl !

Pleasantly surprised,

I must have passed this book up dozens of times, more out of disappointment with the latest selection of other popular African American male authors than anything else. I finally purchased this book in paperback, and spent the most entertaining afternoon reading about Kevin, Antoine, Tyrone and Maurice than I could have ever imagined! There are so many positive elements to the story line; it is difficult to capture them all. Mainly, the plot revolves around three close friends working at an alternative school for boys under the principalship of Maurice, a poor excuse of a man. Although Kevin, Antonine and Tyrone all from different backgrounds, and have their own strong beliefs, they genuinely love and support one another, which is important to have when they fall in love with women they meet on a dating service line. Within these 300+ pages, there is more drama, romance and public outbursts than you can ever imagine! I appreciate that Mr. Weber depicts characters that follow their heart, and not dollar signs to find happiness- and that he allows them to learn from their mistakes to become better men. This is a story for every type of reader; a romantic, a cynic, and even burned out Omar Tyree and Eric Jerome Dickey fan!

A waste of your time and money,
By "andrecle" (Cleveland, OH) - See all my reviews

I recently purchased Mr. Weber's book at a local bookstore because of a wonderful review that I found about it. As I began reading the book, it seemed promising. However, the more and more I read it, the more let down I was. I didn't expect the book to be great, but I thought that it would at least be believable. I felt more like I was watching a bad Jerry Springer rerun than reading a book. I found the book very to be very stereotypical in its portrayal of young black males. I may just be a young college student and by no means a literary critic, but I believe that there are much better black authors out there.

Lookin' for entertainment, found it!,
This review is from: Lookin' For Luv (Paperback)
I hated that this story came to an end, I had withdrawal symptoms. The friendship that Kevin, Tyrone, and Antoine shared reflected the many positive relationships that many African-American males share. Those relationships need to be introduced to the world. Lookin' for Luv was indeed a thrill a minute, twists around every corner. I laughed, cried, prayed, and screamed at the characters. Keep up the good work!

Carl Weber is a good writer. I read this book after reading the reviews as well as getting recommendations from my bookclub. As promised it was hilarious. So much detail, but not in a tedious manner, in a realistic manner. Good job at addressing various issues while maintaining the flow of the story. I enjoyed reading the points of views of different African American men dating. Although it has made me petrified of the mere thought of calling a dateline :)
