Pair beautiful photographs with compelling stories and you have Wing Young Huie's book, Looking for Asian American. In the book Frank Hu writes, "The American dream is more mirage than memory. For almost all of us our days are ethnocentric. As we lapse into sedentary routines, inertia produces insularity. We live among "our people" in the suburbs, and we define ourselves thus." Wing Young Huie travels the United States in search of the American dream from the streets of San Francisco's Chinatown to the small towns in North Dakota.

James Truslow Adams first used the term "American Dream" in 1931 in his book The Epic of America. In it he wrote, "The American Dream is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstance of birth or position." The American dream was achieved by iconic figures such as Charlie Chan, Bruce Lee, Martin Yan and Jackie Chan who has made it in the media, iconic figures we as Asians measure our success by. This is made evident through his photographs, where framed posters and reproductions of these icons are present in their surroundings. These men are what Wing has outlined in his photographs as the American dream.

Wing Young Huie didn't see himself as the "other" while growing up in Duluth Minnesota, because he was isolated from other Asian Americans, and related to a predominately white community.
